Hello, lately I found this photo of an old US penny taken by my uncle from his collection (this penny is most likely lost, so I only have these pictures unfortunately). I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what could have caused these both sides copper 'droplet' (if it is). When analyzing coin alignement, we can see that droplets are on the same location, but not perfectly align however.

Thanks in advance!

Tony

@tony, first welcome to CCF. Second, rather than droplets, these two round areas on this cent look much more like divots to me, more specifically, partial drill holes. Should you ever find this cent again, please confirm whether they are proud or inset.

Yes, I suspect the features are drill-caused divots--not raised. Examining the coin in-hand would help resolve what's going on.

Thank you all for your answers, I really appreciate :)

It's seems by the answers I got here and on another forum that the drill hypothesis is unanimous! I was fooled by the visual illusion of the pictures thinking both sides anomalies were raised, but it seems not at the end.

I thought about the drill damage, but I did a little experiment comparing coin alignement, and the 2 oddities seem not perfectly aligned, also reason why I thought it couldn't be drill.

But based on all answers I got, it seems either:
- drill attempt on both sides, explaining why it's not aligned
- someone on the other forum told "Drill mark for sure, it is not lined up perfect because the dies are not lined up as good as your overlay"

Thank you again for your precious answers!

yes, a very sharp drill bit created this effect. If the copper was dropped on this coin - it would be more rounded not perfectly conical.

tonyzz, , but have an alignment question.
Was the overlay alignment done by only rotating the first reverse image 180°? If so then I'm thinking it still needs a horizontal flip before being overlay-ed. If I'm right, that would make the two anomalies not as close together, but further apart. Thanks, Doug.
