I'll say EF-45 or AU-50, unsure if once cleaned. to the CCF!

the coin probably grades low AU however this is one I would be inclined to soak her in acetone for a day or so and see if it helps. only 100% acetone

Low AU. If you go with the long soak in 199% acetone, post pics of the result. Thanks.

How long of a soak would you recommend? She is quite dirty. I would imagine I would have to rinse with distilled water and pop the coin into fresh acetone a few times.

The toning and staining might not come off with acetone, but it's worth a try. Usually acetone dissolves things quickly, but you could probably let it soak overnight.

Quote: The toning and staining might not come off with acetone, but it's worth a try its going to depend on what its composed of. hard to say looking at photos but you're right...cant hurt as the eye appeal is pretty bad. it would grade straight but have AU value

The first coin I popped in the acetone was a dirty 1881-o that needed a bath anyway.... They had similar grime. Here is the coin after a 24 hour bath and a distilled water rinse. The details of the coin stand out more.

i'd say it was a pretty good soak. probably as best as it could get. i'd even give it another shot. as she sits the coin looks mid AU however the area in and around the lower bust and date has a couple good hits. although the dig at K5 and K7 in the field could pull a 98 damaged code as the metal has been displaced. my guess is that since they are not in key areas and are not that big it probably would go straight although the value would be affected by the overall eye appeal.
if you toss it in again give us an update. one thing to keep in mind when doing this is that on one hand it may clean the coin up it may also show all kinds of marks and issues hidden by the grime.

One more bath in the acetone and its cleaned up nice. Definity shows more dings. The reverse looks much better in hand than the image shows. Final thoughts on grading?

i think i'd call it AU53. the only question is whether it would grade straight. anytime you use anything on a coin whether its acetone or verdicare its going to enhance anything under there. sometimes its a good thing and sometimes not. I think it was probably better you did this than not. at least the eye appeal is a little better. they are not going to call an acetoned coin details neither would they for verdicare but if that revealed issues unseen prior then it could. I think its it like 50/50 straight grade. I know that doesn't help but maybe you can get a couple more comments on the new photos
