Hello,

My uncle passed away on Friday (4/24/09) and I was trying to think of a nice tribute to him so I thought maybe placing a Proof Set from the year he was born (1956) in his coffin along with some other stuff the family is placing in with him. Unfortunately my Grandma is very particular and I couldn't afford a 1956 set right now. So, is this a really weird thing to do considering I'm a coin collector and my uncle was not?

Thanks,
Rich

How about taking a picture of the 1956 set (probably available on EBAY- maybe ask seller's permission to use the photo) and putting the picture in there? Then the coins stay out here where we all can enjoy them AND you don't have to spend money.

I'm sorry for your loss.

when my Grandfather died I put a GW dollar coin in his pocket. He was a coin collector and was really looking forward to the president dollars coming out but got sick before they were released and died not long after and never got the chance to get one himself

I don't think this is weird at all. How about one of the coins with the year 1956 on it. That should be more in your budget. It would be a nice touching gift from the coin collector in the family.

I actually think a decent quality circulated coin from that year would be a great choice and more symbolic of a loved ones life than a proof set that just stayed in a plastic case during their entire lifetime. Maybe of a denomination that has some meaning to you or your uncle. Or maybe a circulated coin from the year of birth and death each?

I am sorry about your Uncle, Snitchard.. and it's not weird at all to do something like that. I agree with pyrbob.. and if Grandma is particular, you can always put your tribute in his shirt pocket. Or if you or a friend is good with scissors then a needle, sew it into something else and place that in with him. Nobody but you and your Uncle need ever know

Rich, I'm sorry for the loss of your Uncle. When my Grandfather passed on last year, everyone put something on top of his coffin. I put a fishing lure as him and I were fishing partners. I think a couple nice circulated coins of that year. This would be a nice tribute to your Uncle

Rich, I too am sorry for your loss, it would seem like most people who know each other, there is a special bond or relationship between people, that said, Go for it, He obviously meant very much to you with the time you spent together and the things you both did,I personally like to plant a tree or the person I am trying to Honor, their favorite bush or plant, whatever,it is the thought that really counts, something you will see always to remember them by, just my thoughts, Family is a wonderful thing, only sometimes the one's we love are often gone much toooo soon, be well, Mike....
