Someone more knowledgeable will probably answer, but if it is real, that coin is definately worth keeping, as even low grade coins of that type usually sell in the US for $15 or so.

Wow, that's a Morgan with nice details. It's not one of the rarest, but I'll bet there's a number of collectors here that would like to replace the one in their collection with it.

The experts will be along, shortly, to authenticate and grade it for you.

Welcome to the forum, Braveheart!

This coin has an odd, non-original look to me. I'd guess it was "dipped" to remove tarnish and has since developed the greyish color. There are many counterfeit Morgan dollars but I don't see anything suspicious about this one, other than the color. The 1883 is a common date so I doubt anyone would go to the trouble of making bogus examples. If this were my coin I'd try carrying it around in my pants pocket for a few weeks to see if a bit of wear would produce a more natural appearance.

I'd grade it EF-45 for details. It should be worth $15 easy to just about any Morgan dollar collector.

Well they've made fake Ikes before, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were fakes of this particular date as well.

That coins will bring $20/25 at any local coin auction I go to. I think it is a great start to your Morgan collection. Nice coin.

Thanks for the feedback fellas.

This coin has lay in an old tin for 35 years I think, along side other old British coins. I`m not a coin collector, this tin came to me, when my father died in 1977, and I never gave it another thought til recently.

Also I would like to ask why it is called a "Morgan" ?

Here is the Tin the 1 dollar turned up in

Greetings and Welcome to the forum. The legend of the Morgan dollar is that of Sir Henry Morgan's lost pirate silver which was stolen and subsequently found in a cache (east of Centerville, Tx. This in Leon County by the Trinity River) of Jean Lafitte's back in the mid 1800s. Then the Republic of Texas sold this tremendous cache of precious metal to the US Government in return for the right to Secede at any time and at anyplace.

This silver was secretly melted and struck into US Silver Dollars-- Morgan dollars. The (38 tons) gold however was spirited away to parts yet unknown, but some say it's buried under Mount Rushmore in a cave guarded by two heroic survivors of the Alamo who've previously been assumed dead...

Seriously, the designer of the coin was George T. Morgan. Here is a useful link with information.
