The copper plating on this zinc cent was ripped apart by the pressure of the strike. The area around the mint mark and distorted slide where the rim should have been above the letters of ED STATES of AME show heavy Split Plate Doubling in the exposed zinc of the planchet core. I think that the date would seem to be 1991 or 1992, but I can't confirm that with surety. I can just see the bottom tip of a 1 or 2 in the place of the last digit. If you use the shape of any other digit 3 through 9 in an overlay, more than just a small dot of raised metal would be visible. Please feel free to comment on anything you see and if you can help me confirm the date. Thanks for looking! ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Nice off-center cent! Looking at an quick overlay of the dates on a 1991-D and 1992-D cent I see the bottom tip of the 1 and the bottom left edge of the 2 are about in the same location. Tough to say which it may be...

Neat error coin. I like those metal expansion marks from the reverse devices. The way the underlying zinc peeks through makes them super visible.

@Maine Member This was part of an ebay 'lot' that I purchased back in 2009. The images were of a 20-coin binder sheet, really bad seller pics, and didn't show how nice this coin was, but at that time I was buying tons of error coins, so I decided to take a chance. I bid $22 and paid $5 shipping. I was the ONLY bidder on the lot. This was the best off-center coin, but they also sent me a pair of double struck coins and several clipped cents, nickels and even a triple clipped quarter! It had to be the best 1 bid win I ever made on ebay.
