I just picked up this beautifully toned Walking Liberty. The coin was part of a roll of similar toned silver dollars, which were part of a larger collection sold to a Jeweler in Florida. It was already slabbed, and I would like to know what any of you know about the PCI grading system used on the coin. Since the seller has several more toned Liberty dollars from the same roll, I am thinking of purchasing another. But because this one is slabbed, I can only trust the grading as marked, which is MS70 Deep Cameo by PCI. What do you think, would you buy another. My apologies, I attached a lot of photos.

Thanks

PCI is not one of the top three.

I'm not a fan. I see some field marks on the reverse so doubt this would grade MS-70 with NGC or PCGS.

It's amazing what you can do with a blowtorch.

This is bullion, if it's even legit. 445/1000? Really? Only worth the (assumed) silver it is made of.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I would not trust the grade at all or that it is natural toning. It is not a Deep Cameo coin; it is not proof. If it were proof, it would have a W mint mark on the reverse. Early green PCI holders are sometimes accurate with the grade.

Natural toning has depth to it - this coin exhibits the same color no matter the depth. My best guess is something was sprayed on the surface. The gold is not natural.

If that's is a MS-70, then I'm the President of the United States. Wait....no, that's not a MS-70.

Looks AT'd, but definitely not a 70 in any event.

To answer the OPs question. If it makes you happy, sure, buy another. If you're trying to fund your kid's college tuition, no.

@A1agrl: I don't want to rain on your parade, but consider the following:

1. PCI is not held in the same regard as PCGS, NGC or even ANACS. Many believe their coins to be overgraded. However, I know of PCI coins going either way when resubmitted to PCGS and/or NGC. Sometimes their grade went up, sometimes down and sometimes stayed the same. It's very important to consider the coin itself and not the grade on the holder when purchasing.

2. I'm confused by the "MS-70 / Deep Cameo" designation. The MS denotes an uncirculated strike while "Deep Cameo" is typically a qualifier for Proof coins. It strikes me as odd to see them combined. To my eyes, based on your images, the coin is not "Deep Cameo."

3. What is going on in the 2 o'clock area of the coin's obverse? It doesn't seem to simply be toning and, if it isn't, I am surprised the coin received an MS-70 grade.

Just my opinions, your mileage may vary. The important thing is how you feel about the coin. If you like it, that's all that matters - it's your collection. I'd just be careful about paying premium prices for "70" coins unless you are absolutely certain such grades are accurate.
