I usually start these threads by saying " I don't really collect these but.." I guess I cannot anymore. I have several now, and my eye on another for next week. So...I picked this one up because when I buy these I buy coins (for the most part) that look un-cleaned. This one is in an older PCGS slab, so I figure I am safe with cleaning. When I look at this coin, I can see what looks like hairlines from cleaning under the dark toning...but what do I know...They are the experts right ? or do they let old cleanings go on these ? You cannot see it in the pics, it is hard to see even in hand. Anyway, I like the coin and I will post the slab and grade later. All opinions appreciated, thanks for looking ! It's nice to see a Bust Half that has done its job in American commerce!
I think it is a solid G-4.

I agree, Good-4 overall. A little more blending of the letters with the rim would drop it to AG-3.
PCGS and other TPGs will accept a certain amount of rim nicks, dents, scratches, and even hairlines on graded coins. They make a qualitative judgment about whether the marks add up to a "damaged" or "cleaned" status; if they aren't that bad, the coin is graded. I think they are more accepting of such defects on well-worn coins which are likely to have suffered various abuses during circulation. To the extent that the marks affect the eye appeal of the coin they will reduce the final numerical grade.

Neat coin. O-105, I think, but there's things about the date that are interesting. Do you have the ability to do a closeup of the date?
I'm going to email our resident Bust Half Nut for a look.

Hello Guys,
I'm somewhat torn between the O-105 and the O-106. I think I can see a hint of a die crack on the reverse of the coin which would indicate it being a 106 along with the smashed/unusual date -- 1812.
Take care Ben

Thanks for your observations ! This coin is in an older PCGS holder, and I think those who posted grades on this one will be very surprised. Here's a closer pic of the date if ya still need it, and another obv pic. I was able to get the hairlines to show up a bit better with the light I used this time. Thanks again !

Yep, I'm very surprised!
Is this date known for a very weak strike? The level of detail just doesn't look VG-10 to me, but if part of that is due to strike, maybe that would explain the grade.
So much for my dreams of being a PCGS grader ... guess I better stick to my day job!

VG10 is a bit of a break but the coin looks VG. The reverse maybe G06.

The zoom on the date shows good detail. Seems about right.

NICE Half. I just got into Bust Coinage recently. Looks like you may have caught a break on the grade.

I would have called it a VG-8. Nice!
