PCGS - At a speed of 120 cents per minute, the U.S. Mint's "penny" presses move too fast to know exactly why errors like this one occur. But we do know that this cent was somehow vertical during striking and folded over.
Perfectly imperfect for Mint Error Monday.

Surprised PCGS would make such a simple mistake.

120 coins per minute means it would take 70 presses running 24/7 an entire year without stopping to mint 4.5 billion cents.

A quick google search shows those machines churn out approximately 750 finished coins per minute, which is an astounding number, and that Philly has only about 60 operating at any given time.

Nice catch.

This is a copper coin, from at least 44 years ago. The standards have changed, especially as relief has been lowered a lot to allow much higher speeds and mintage numbers. Current presses output 750 coins per minute.

Though, I am not sure how they still made billions back then at slower speeds.

Quote:
A circulating coin press strikes 750 coins per minute. The Philadelphia Mint produces 47,250 coins per minute if all of its 63 presses are operational. The Denver Mint makes 40,500 coins per minute with its 54 coin presses. That results in millions of circulating coins each day.

I wonder how many such coins get rejected by a sorting mechanism and sent off for scrap.

That is a scrumpscious looking error.
750 coins doesn't divide up evenly for a 4 head coin press though.

720 is the number of coins per minute for a four "head" coin press is what turned up for me online.

720 coins ÷ 60 seconds= 12 coins/second/four head coin press

12 coins/second ÷ 4 heads= 3 coins/head/second

So each 4 head coin press can produce 1,036,800 if it runs for a full 24 hrs.
Any way you slice it that adds up to a lot of machines producing a lot of coins. And thats only one denomination.

Yes, I found the same claim, but could not confirm the source which is why I posted the 750 I found on the US Mint website.

It could be that it is 3000 per four minutes, with strikes beginning at the end of one minute and into the start of the next.

Good point Jbuck. That does divide up evenly and a longer time frame is probably more accurate for a count.
