I have a 1917 type 1 SLQ that I would appreciate your grade opinions and also an assessment as to what caused the surface to be so rough. It appears completely silver and shiny normally with decent luster and cartwheeling but under magnification it looks quite rough with significant color variation as seen in the pics. Ignore the green coloration.. artifact of resolution reduction. Thanks. Panzaldi, if you see this I would appreciate your opinions on my previous SLQ submissions that you missed over the last couple of weeks.

I bought it on ebay from a seller named "Coins and Collectibles" that has been a member since 2001 and has 15k sales with a 99.9% positive rating. His description guarantees is to be authentic but says nothing else. I paid a lot.

This seems like one of those cases where it is fair to question as to why it has not already been certified. Maybe it has been whizzed / cleaned - hard to tell from images.

I think the coin has been dipped to death and is suffering from dead luster. Might get a 61 on a good day.

There are absolutely no whiz marks or scratches of any kind. Just a very uniformly rough/grainy surface. I don't know what a polished/buffed surface looks like. If it is dipped then would it have an MS61 value or just half of that because it's been dipped?

Sounds like the deed is done. Might as well just submit it and get if over with. Personally, I like it, but I really don't know much about this series.

The granularity of the surfaces is concerning. If it's genuine, I suspect it would get a details grade. Can you get an accurate weight, and provide a link to the seller's ebay listing?

1916 and 1917 LSQ's are notorious for having "grainy" surfaces. It kinda goes with the territory. (The early Walking Liberty half dollars can look similar, too.). I just think your quarter has been dipped one time too many and it has impaired luster. It may have visited the grading services a few times already and found it's way back home in a body bag or in a holder that the submitter wasn't happy with. However, if YOU like it, and are ok with what you paid for it, is really all that matters.

Agree with frog , This needs to be submitted . Quite frankly ,not sure this is real .Far too grainy for what you normally encounter . Suspect , cast counterfeit is a real possibility.

Send her off to get graded.

Opinions have ranged from dipped too many times and having dead luster with a likely details grade with MS61 at best, to being seriously suspect of being fake. If the best of those is the result, then I break even. If the worst happens then I'm out a lot. I was hoping for an MS64 when I bought it but thought the surface way too grainy to be legitimate upon receipt, and I guess I was right. I think my best course of action is to return the coin. BTW the weight is 6.25 grams. I've got an AU 1917 type 1 with much smoother surfaces that has way more luster. Guess I'll be happy with that (I'll put that up for opinions later). This coin collecting is tough. Any opinions from you guys on how much this coin is worth?

If you send in for grading, the coin most likely will come back details altered surfaces. Return the coin to seller for a refund.

There is a much nicer looking PCGS UNC detail cleaned coin that sold on ebay recently for $270. Thr grainy nature of this coin is not attractive, I would not pay half that for this one. Just my amateur opinion.
