Hello all,

Take a look at this silver nickel I found today. It looks like it was buried at one point, and the weird part about it is it has small pieces missing all over. What happened to this poor coin?

@mic, a day when you find silver is always a good day. As to the reason for the nicked up areas of missing metal, it is impossible to know what insults have occurred over the past 80+ years. I suspect that the as-stuck nickel had some nice laminations, which have subsequently been stripped away. This is perhaps most visible in the region of the word IN to the middle of the bust on the obverse.

Maybe a metal detector find?

Could be a dug coin, or just road rash.

Might have been a Lamination that stripped away as Spence said. It also could be a metal detector find.

The laminations on War Nickels seem to tend more towards thin strips. I would hazard a guess at some kind of crushing or scraping damage to those edges. Chewed away by something acidic is another possibility.

Any silver is good silver. =)
