Can the plating just be coming off in that area?

Plating issue, but not considered a de-lamination or lamination peel since it's a plated cent. (or at least it should be in 1983)

I like it. The last three images are very helpful. I agree with lots of folks above but the image showing the field to the left of the shoulder really looks like a retained piece of a struck through of a piece of metal. The rest of the incuse area may be where the extra metal was torn away.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.

Not too sure it is a cud- but it sure is interesting looking. It looks like the zinc planchet was contaminated and the copper electroplate did not adhere properly and is pealing away.

Very Cool " Looking " Piece, The 1983 Lincoln Cent Planchet looks like it was a combination of Poor metal Composition, as seen in the Missing Portion(s) Discoloring and Apparent Die Break, on Top of what Could Be as PeteS55 Noted, a Struck-Through. Very Good Eyes !!!!!!!!!! The First of The Last photos Shows Discoloration, ( possibly De- Lamination ), in the Lower portion of The Void. Also in looking at the Same Last top photo You can See a Wavy Area Just Above the Upset Rim, from the Middle of the Photo to The Right, To Me, it appears the Upsetting of This Planchet , With The De-Lamination already going on There Too... Not to Mention the Already Nice Die Break Too, Which I Bet there Are More Die Stages to This . Lots Going on with This Lincoln Cent !!! Just My Opinions, Thank You for Sharing, Excellent Eyes Too !!!!!! The Small Horizontal " necrotic " or Blackened Areas show Possible Other Die Breaks or De-Lamination?

I don't know about a retained struck through, as there are flow lines that carry through all areas, unless the flow lines were just struck into the extra metal, which I guess is possible.

Thanks for all of the responses. Doesn't look like I have a final conclusion on this one.
Does anyone have a recommendation on what to do with this coin? Maybe send it to someone? Thanks.
