Hey all, I want to see how close I got in my self evaluation of this 1853 Large Cent. I will answer honestly as to what I got in terms of grade and variety after a few replies. PS: Lemme know how my camera skills are doing Thanks, CoinAdvocate

I'd say AU details, cleaned, retoned.

Quite a bit of wear, more obvious on the reverse. I'd say XF detail. The halos of orange color seem inappropriate given the wear. JTCC may be on the right track: cleaned and re-toning.

The one from pcgs photograde has very similar effects, what's the difference?

I'd say low AU details, cleaned. There are clear signs of wear in the hair and in the reverse leaves. In the MS-62 example, there is original luster in protected areas hugging the devices. In your coin, you see the opposite—a dark circle hugging the stars and inside the numbers of the date, then an unnatural light orange color where it was cleaned, and some retoning in the fields.

I wish I could take coin photos that good. What is your set-up? John1

I'll say AU-55. Unsure if cleaned.

Alright, so I self evaluated as au 58 newcomb 9. If you look under the 1 it's been repeated. I'm a bit too new to evaluate cleaning, but I'm learning. I think mostly I missed that the back was a bit worn and so I evaluated higher than it deserved mostly just judging the obverse. If you guys want a close up of the 1 let me know!

Quote: I wish I could take coin photos that good. What is your set-up? I bought this light ring: And just clip it onto my S23+, zoom into 3x, put the coin on my laptop (grey background) and snap the photo after taking some time to balance the focus.
