the reverse is giving off that appearance to, however very hard to say 100% yes to only viewing photos. That's why I bought a couple slabbed examples (cheap) to compare to my raw coins.

I'd say 2x2 it until you can see another example in the future

Put it in acetone for a few hours and see what happens.

Exactly, give it an acetone soak, it's most likely a staining of some kind.

It's looking to me like it could be part of the copper core showing through.

How about an image of the edge near "EST" of WEST VIRGINIA to see what the layers and reeding look like.
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
