Found 1998 Wide AM. Wondering if distortion on date is die deterioration/ grease effect or something else.

Any info is appreciated.

Appears to be a worn out die on the date. We'd need a pic of the reverse to confirm if its a WAM.

Probably had a little bit of grease in the die to make the nine look like that, or maybe circulation damage.

I thought so too, I have several 98 Wide AM and they all have round inner eight , this is very oblong.

Looks like metal was taken from the bottom loop of the 8 and placed on top of the 8... Just my very humble opinion.

You're welcome. Refreshing to see a new member that has done some homework before starting to post coins. It's apparent that you know a little bit but nice that you will also listen, also refreshing.
