So what do you guys prefer to collect? Or does it just depend on the particular coin?

I've been working on Jeffersons for a little while now, trying to assemble an entire BU/Proof Dansco set from 38-2005. But, I recently started a just business strike circulated album and I gotta say, not only is it cheaper, but the simplicity of it I also really like. I kind of hate how much money I've spent honestly on these BU nickels. I'd say easily probably a couple hundred and I'm still not done.

I am wondering if I should just abandon the BU/proof set, and concencrate on my regular, circulated album. I have all coins in it except various pre-1960 dates .

What do you usually collect? Or does it just depend?

Uncirculated collections are always nice but gets expensive. A nice circulated album of like condition coins is always nice to look at. I don't like albums that have a mix of circulated and then BU coins in them - it just looks a bit strange to me.

It's a mix for me. A few albums are targeted for uncirculated, most other albums feature a range of grades--mostly AU58 and below.

To be cost effective, try buying mint sets than crack out the coins and fill multiple albums.

I collect both circulated and uncirculated coins. Although, the majority of them come from mixed bank rolls.

I started my collecting journey by filling folders with coins found in circulation. I eventually moved my coins into albums, then added uncirculated and proof coins to the mix. I Never bothered to upgrade any of the circulated coins because of their sentimental value.

I collect both. Uncirculated coins and Proofs are put into Dansco albums, and most circulated keepers are stored in 2x2s, or, depending on what the coin is, an Airtite.

Most of my collection is circulated. Part of what I collect is the connection to the history that was happening when my coins and banknotes were involved in the everyday life of the people. I certainly admire museum quality coins but I am good with them being in museums where everyone can see them. It's also a lot more affordable this way!

If you have the resources and the time to buy what you like and store it properly, then it is never a waste to buy what you enjoy simply because you enjoy it. The resale value of my collection is negligible but I don't buy as an investment, I buy because it brings me happiness and satisfaction.

I collect both Circulated (Mostly) and Uncirculated. It usually depends on how rare the coin and pricing. Heres a circulated 1922 D, I got a good deal on it considering the cost of one like it in UNC.
Perfect example of the reason for collecting both in my case. It is a little more circulated than I thought it would be from photos seen.

For the past few years I haven't had the funds to buy any coins from dealers. Instead, I've been relying solely on what I can find in change. Every now and then I'll find something interesting, such as a wheatie or an old nickel. Just last week I got a nice-looking 1946 Jefferson. So the answer to your question is circulated.

(I also have been collecting Washingtons from change in the quest to fill up a folder dated from 1980 to 1998. I think I began about 18 months ago. As of today, I only have one empty hole left to go: 1989-D. I'm excited!)

I think going forward I am going to rely mostly on circulating coins. I suppose also circulating coins doesn't also need to be solely from pocket change. I know you can actually purchase them from ebay or dealers as well, and being circulated, they will most likely be cheaper than BU coins. I noticed my local coin dealer also had some coins, particularly Jeffersons, that though appeared to be uncirculated, appeared to be more AU grade, and thus a bit cheaper.

I don't know, there is something unsatisfactory to me about purchasing all your coins in BU, compared to hunting around and finding the majority of them. I completed a set of "BU" State park quarters awhile back, and honestly, I don't really know what to do with them. I wish I would have assembled them through coin roll hunting more so. It would have also been a lot cheaper.

I am having much more fun honestly with my Jefferson nickel circulation set, compared to my BU/proof album, and I don't really know if I want to invest anymore money into buying anymore strict BU coins for it. I've probably spent 200-300 so far.

I feel I'd rather invest my money in something more worth while, like filling out more of my Buffalo nickel set or more coins for my Liberty nickel set.

Collect coins in the way you enjoy, that is what matters most!
