Hello

I found a 1956 penny that weighs only 2.97g. It has multiple errors, appears to be a double die, and is a Wheat penny. Can anyone tell me why this one penny weighs so much lighter and if that is worth anything?

The weight is just out of tolerance so it probably was a thinner planchet and then add in circulation wear. As far as doubling, pics are a little blurry to tell.

@new, first welcome to CCF. Second, in 1956 all US cents had this reverse design so that isn't anything unusual. As to the doubling, please tell us if you see this on the front or the back and then which specific design elements appear doubled. As @seek mentioned, we will need an in-focus close up pic of that area to know for sure what is going on. Please add that to this thread. Thx.

Lets see in 1956 over 420 million were minted in Philadelphia, so unless this cent does have or is a variety cent....value would be @ 3 cents...JMO

It's underweight, but it might not necessarily be a thin planchet. It might just be badly worn. What do you mean "multiple errors" though?

The listed weight is 3.11 grams, with a tolerance of .13 grams.
Back then thin rolled coin stock was common.

It's a little bit underweight, but not much. We'll need much clearer photos to determine if it's a Doubled Die.
