Found this one in a bank box this evening. Weight is 2.54 and the first one I've ever found. The edge is curious.
Anyone know how these get out into the wild?

From what I've read the edge is consistent with unstruck plated cent planchet. The collar flattens out that ridge during the strike.

I would think the upsetting mill would have flattened that out. It does appear to have a proto-rim, so I'm not sure how that edge came to be.

Supposedly, they just slip past Quality Control at the Mint. These days, however, I wouldn't be surprised if Mint employees are sneaking them out. Especially when you see how many are for sale on ebay.

I believe the Mint used to give those out at the end of every tour. Probably someone just tossed one as part of a collection dump.

Could there be such a thing as a partial collar "failed" strike? Note the railroad wheel appearance on the edge. Just a thought !!!

The pressure from the striking of the hammer and anvil dies is needed to bring the collar into play. That edge could not be impressed without pressure from the obverse and reverse dies.

Excellent. I found two roll hunting many years ago--around four months apart. None since.

I'm wondering if this could be an extreme example of Struck Through Grease and a partial collar strike.

Edit:in the second image @1:00, There might be letters near the rim.
