I've had this nickel for a while and always though this was just post-mint damage. I finally looked at it again under a microscope and there's a lot of weird stuff going on that I'm hopeful I can get your input on. I'm also interested in the "chunk" between the 4 and 3 in 1943. Thanks!

to the CCF, HolyJuan! Definitely a lamination - very prevalent on war nicks. The "chunk" by the date is just a folded over piece of laminate.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Nice pictures. It's an aesthetically pleasing example of a lamination, as others have said. Lams were common in the 35% silver War Nickels. Apparently it was a difficult alloy to mix correctly.

An excellent lamination example - " War Nickels" do have a higher amount of lamination issues as the coin stock was rolled from a mixture of 56% copper, 35% copper, & 9% manganese - all which were at different melting temperatures causing problems in the alloy metals.
