I am looking at the key Kennedy half dollar and I would prefer a slabbed version but I am seeing different labeling which adds to the confusion. Both NGC and PCGS examples seem to have some labeled SMS and MS-69 while others are labeled SP-69. I am of the understanding that this is a specimen matte proof coin and should be correctly labeled SP. Why would the top TPG's add to the confusion by calling them SMS?

I would think SP-** Would be correct, but SMS would not be incorrect, it did come in a set

I'm no expert but it appears that CAC and PCGS refer to it one way while NGC the other. That was my impression running a few searches on it.

There is not consensus on this, however, it was a specially handled coin and part of a two coin set. Therefore, I would say is is more like a proof or specimen coin then Mint State.

Great Topic,

Could anyone definitively state the Mintage on the 1998 Matte finished Robert F. Kennedy half's, in the 2-Coin Sets.

I see the 2023 Red Book states there were 62,000 Coins minted, I am seeking the Mintage numbers on the 1998-S 2- Coin Collector's sets Minted?

Under the Half Dollars heading I see no listings for the 2-Coin Sets .

Under the Commemorative heading I see the mintages for the:

1998-S Proofs = 99,020

1998-S Uncirculated = 106,422

IF true The Uncirculated version Was minted More than the Proofs, which is Not to common....

The 2-Coin Collector's set, Unc and Matte finish = No Information.....

If anyone Could fill in this Blank, I am Appreciative, Thanks MD.

Morgan's Dad, the estimated mintage for the Two Coin set (matte finished JFK Half with RFK Dollar) is 62,000 (see 2023 Red Book 1998 Kennedy Matte finish footnote c and Kennedy and Franklin Red Book 1998s Kennedy Matte half dollar).
