Have you as a coin roll searcher ever imagined going back in time a generation (or even two!) while purchasing from your bank at face value some rolls of coins to search? I certainly have. Alas the technical issues associated with mastering time travel have prevented me from doing so. Until now!! I have been given that exact gift from my 2024 CCF Secret Santa. Five unsearched rolls of nickels from a long time ago. Perhaps it's best to use Santa's words to describe the gift: " You may not be searching nickels any longer, but you can make better use of them than me. These were collected from circulation by my grandparents (and a few by my parents). They learned during the depression to save every coin they could. When my father passed away in xxxx we rolled up the nickels from a large container of coins. Trust me, they have not been searched." A photo of the fabulous gift - 5 time travel rolls of nickels plus other lovely gifts. What great fun it will be to search those five rolls! I'm going to share the search with you and compare the find rate statistics from my data base of 320,800 nickels searched at my Jefferson CRH set completion. http://goccf.com/t/198187The first roll was opened today - and did not disappoint! Complete update tomorrow - for now Happy New Years eve.

That is an excellent gift that someone obviously took the time to keep in mind for you, very cool! Good luck on the hunt and regardless of your finds this is special. I have not yet but need to look into the secret Santa on this site, thanks for sharing.

Roll 1 Search Update: Bottom line is 37 of the 39 nickels met my 'find' criteria of 1959 or earlier. This first roll has succeeded in taking my search back a few generations ago. The two that did not were both 1964-D. Dedicated nickel roll searchers will certainly recognize the ubiquitous nature of the 1964 dated coins. High level statistics: Find rate for this roll is 37/39 = 94.87% My nickel search excel database ended at 394,800 coins searched (with 5,031 finds) for an overall Find Rate of 1.274% Roll Specific DataFinds were: 1940 (1) 1941 (4) 1941-D (3) 1946 (7) 1946-D (1) 1947-D (2) 1948-D (2) 1949-D (2) 1951 (1) 1952 (2) 1952-D (1) 1952-S (4) 1953 (1) 1954-D (2) 1955-D (2) And of course the two 1964-D coins. So, no semi-keys dates so far. Nickel roll searchers will recognize the common 1941, 1946 and 1954-D as they appear in my "Stop Bothering Top 10 Easiest to Find" in the thread referenced in my introduction above. Of interest however is the unexpected find of four 1952-S coins. My roll search excel database shows that in my CRH days I found a total of 19 of these, out of 5,031 total finds. So, my historical Find Rate for the 1952-S was 0.38%, and yet they make up 10.81% of the finds in this initial roll. I suspect the law of averages will take over to smooth that high find rate out. We'll see shortly. Onward to Roll #2! Great fun with these 'generations ago' nickels.

2024 Secret Santa Roll Search Roll 2 Update:Roll 2 was a real winner! I even came across the first key date Jefferson. The current roll sort is in the foreground. Left to right by date then top to bottom by mint (P, D, S). It certainly brings back fond memories of my 390,400 nickel CRH days. The pile in the background are the 37 'finds' from roll #1. High Level StatisticsRoll #2 was a 100% winner. 39 of 39 coins were dated prior to 1960. I recognize that a standard $2 nickel roll has 40 coins. The first two have been a tad short. So, for the first two rolls my find rate is 76 of 78 coins. That is an amazing 97.44% find rate. Roll specific data:Finds were: 1939 (3) No DDR1940 (3) 1940-D (1) 1940-S (1) 1941 (5) 1941-S (1) 1946 (5) 1947 (2) 1947-D (1) 1947-S (1) 1948 (1) 1948-D (2) 1949 (2) 1950 (1) Key date, photo below1952-D (4) 1952-S (1) 1954 (1) 1954-D (2) 1955-D (2) Key Date JeffersonDuring my CRH days I defined a key date Jefferson as any of the 9 coins with annual mintage below 10 million. The 1950 (Philly) Jefferson checks in at #9 on that list with a mintage of 9.8 million. During my 390,400 nickel search I found 9 of these - an average find rate of 1 coin per 43,867 nickels searched. Going back two generations with these rolls has already paid off! This is a well circulated example. I grade VG/F range. I've decided to host a contest related to this search. I'll post a link to it shortly. Onward soon to roll #3.

Roll 3 Update:Roll 3 did not disappoint. Found two more 1950 key date coins. The roll 3 sort is in the foreground. The pile in the back are the keepers from the first two rolls. High level statisticsRoll 3 had 35 finds out of 38 coins. So the overall find rate (coins dated prior to 1960) through 3 rolls is 111 finds in 118 coins. Roll specific data1938 (1) 1939 (2) No DDR1940 (2) 1940-S (1) 1941 (2) 1941-D (1) 1946 (2) 1947 (1) 1947-D (1) 1948 (2) 1949 (2) 1950 (2) Key date, photo below1952-D (7) 1952-S (2) 1953 (1) 1953-D (1) 1954-D (1) 1954-S (1) 1955-D (1) 1956-D (1) 1958-D (1) 1963-D (1) Lustrous ~MS631964-D (1) 1969-D (1) The 1969-D is the oldest coins found in the 3 rolls searched. Secret Santa was good to his word that these coins came from a generation (or two) ago. I was surprised to view the MS 1963-D appear. It looks like it was minted yesterday. I placed it into a 2x2 so whoever claims Prize B can have it in its beautiful condition. Key date JeffersonI found two more 1950 (Philly) Jefferson in roll 3. They are well circulated examples which I judge to grade F/VF. I have all 3 1950 coins in 2x2 for eventual distribution. Onward to search roll 4! When I post those results the contest guessing period will end. http://goccf.com/t/474793
