I've always wondered what collectors do with the 40% silver half dollars from 1965-1970. I'm starting to accumulate several of them, and aside from the silver content, I have no reason to keep them. I don't want to bring them to a bank or store since I'd only be getting face value for them. At the same time, they're tying up more money that could be used for other expenses. Does anyone have suggestions for parting with 40% silver half dollars that can bring fair market value to the collector?

With all Dansco %40 Kennedy half holes filled, I just hold on to excess pieces, thinking that some day they would be passed on within the family. Having said that, I only have a few dozen that fall into that category, so it's relatively easy to manage them.

I think you won't find many dealers who will offer a fair price for only a small amount of those coins because typically they are bought and sold in large quantities. Last month a local coin shop owner who purchases and sells "junk" silver coins (the ones that contain 90% silver) at a fair price offered to pay me $3.25 each for 40% Kennedy half dollars -- but only if I sold him at least several rolls. That is ~75% of their melt value.

I've got a bunch so I suppose I'm in the same boat as you. Thx for the info on selling them @nor. I wonder if you could get closer to melt selling privately to a stacker.

I just drop them off at my LCS every few months with other odd silver and gold stuff I've picked up.

Throw them on Craigslist at a small percentage below melt and see. I found a great silver buyer 10-15 years ago that way. We have done business probably 40 -50 times since then, and it all started with a few rolls of 40% halves. Needless to say you have to use common sense with Craigslist (don't agree to meet someone in a dark alley at 2:00 am). I always state in my listing that "Exchange will take place in a well lit public place during daytime hours". Remember that honest buyers have security concerns too.

I still have a small stack of 90% and 40% half dollars, but I traded a number of them at the LCS for store credit, which I immediately used to obtain the remaining Franklin half dollars for my Dansco. I always assumed I would keep the remainder until they become a question for my heirs.
