I received a Jefferson nickel in my change today and later noticed something odd. Not only was it discolored and heavily worn, but also extremely thin—barely thicker than a piece of paper compared to the Nickels standard thickness of 1.95mm. Jefferson's profile and Monticello are faint but still quite pronounced, and I couldn't find a date even under a digital microscope. I doubt it's a mint error, just curious how it got so flat. Any opinions and input are greatly appreciated!

(Oh yeah, I should add that despite being paper-thin, the coin is surprisingly sturdy with no signs of fragility or bending!) Thanks for looking!

It's been subjected to acid or been in some highly corrosive environment.

Definitely exposure to a corrosive environment rather than an error. I'd be interested in knowing the weight as it has lost a large percentage of its mass. Thx for posting!

I have a Dime just like that, taken it to several experts who say the same thing, it has been dipped in acid. I still have it and probably always will only because I do not want someone to think it is an error and spend money to see if it is authentic.

I agree. It's a victim of acid damage. PMD.

I assume it's also considerably smaller than a normal nickel. Acid attacks all sides evenly - including the edge, making the coin smaller in diameter.

I concur. Technically, since that coin has lost so much mass, it's way below the legal minimum weight of a nickel and so it's no longer legal tender.

Greasy, I think that Sherrow01 has gotten more than 4 cents of enjoyment from this pickel (penny nickel).
