Hi All, has anyone ever seen a penny like this that appears to have two different colors? I am very new to this and not familiar with different errors or how coins age over the years. I could understand half of the penny fading if it was half covered for a long time, but seems very odd that the line is identical on the backside of coin. Could it be 2 different allows in the coin? Or is that not a thing lol? Any thoughts would be much appreciated as I am learning as I go and looking through thousands of coins. Having fun going through a collection that was given to me 30 years ago but can be very overwhelming at times!! Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this

It's clearly a surface stain. Try a soak in pure acetone a see if it comes off.

Yes surface staining (not an error) to be sure. The question is whether the toned side was dipped in something that caused that toning or whether the entire coin was dark and someone stripped away the toning by dunking the other half in something. I'm not sure that the numismatic value changes much whether you leave it alone or try to make both sides the same color. Personally, I'd probably just leave it as-is.

Thanks I figured so!! Ive heard a lot of people talk about cleaning in acetone. Is it safe to clean any coin in acetone or should I be mindful of certain metals or coins?

Acetone is a universal "safe" cleaner for coins. As I did, I would recommend experimenting with worthless
coins of all types, and record times and results for reference.
Only use hardware store, pure acetone and never finger nail polish remover. I use distilled water as a rinse.
