1989 D Penny Annealing Or Lamination Error

Kimbwils123 New Member United States 3 Posts	Posted 03/07/2025 8:53 pm Hello, I have been collecting coins for years but just started to really exam them for errors. I have just started learning about errors. I just opened a new roll of 1989 -D pennies and noticed that some of them show the zinc above the letters on the reverse. I think this means the coins were not annealed correctly during the lamination process. I took some pictures. I also saw this on a couple of the dates on the coin. Can someone help me understand what happened during the coin making process to cause this and if it is even an error? Anyone got a good book recommendation on making coins so I can read about the process? Kim Report this Post to the Staff

ijn1944 Bedrock of the Community United States 19118 Posts	Posted 03/07/2025 9:01 pm A little difficult to assess--reflections from the clear mylar may be masking something. For starters, it appears there may (may...) be a split plating issue on the reverse. And, appears to be some Die Deterioration issues on the obverse. Report this Post to the Staff

I mostly see split plate doubling on this cent.
