I found this 1983 cent and thought there might be something with the date. I did some searching and found it looks very close to one on Found in rolls' site. Any opinions or info on this coin appreciated.

It looks like a normal 1983 cent with a hint of Machine Doubling on the 1 of the date. A few die scratches around from some die polishing, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I also see the "line " on all the numerals, this does resemble some class of doubling, how can you be sure this is not a doubled die, I completely respect your knowledge and expertise Chuck, just would you offer some advice on how "we" can surely tell the difference as well, thanking you in advance , Mike

The overall width of the date is not larger. On a class 6 doubled die the devices will appear wider. This is just a normal Cent with some Machine Doubling. It happens.

Please excuse my ignorance, but if it looks identical to the one listed on Found In Rolls' site, what makes that one a doubled die and not this one? Thanks, just trying to learn.

This coin is a doubled die. I was just playing with my 1983 DDOs and this one is amongst them. Ken Potter has this one numbered in his files , so does Wexler. There are 7 or 8 DDOs on 1983 cents at this point. The one you show has the notch on the 1 and a slight notch on the tail of the 3 and in hand, you can see doubling on the rest of the date. A real close look may show some evidence of doubling on the LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST motto.

Images on these are tough to use for identification and if I wasn't playing around with these recently, I might have agreed with Chuck, based upon the image.

The one shown here though, is not the one that I have on my site. The one on my site has much stronger doubling of the date.

Thanks,
Bill

Sometimes you can if you look with a positive attitude with each coin. Examine for every type of doubling that other years have had in the past. Knowing what can be affected, I look for on the next coin under my scope. That is how I found the first 2002-D doubled reverse on the EPU. I knew a 2004-P one was found and now I check every coin.

Hi Coop, don't forget the 2004 D that is doubled exactly the same way as the 2002 and 2004 specimens you have:-)
