I have had this coin for many years. It's been passed down for years from my Dad's Family. I received it when my Dad passed away in 1995. It's been put away since that. Over this past weekend I was going through things and I came across it. I'm interested to know if It's real & if so what's is worth. I would appreciate any help and your comments about this coin. Thank you in advance.

I found it difficult to compare the two since on my screen they are separated by an ad.

But the main difference is in the thickness of the letters. Your half's letters are thicker than the letters of a real one.

Ping tone test comparison alongside known genuine finds a lot of fakes out.

Visual comparison of surfaces shows up many fakes to be 'pasty' in appearance.

There are a couple of problems here, and I actually wrote a Coin Week article on these counterfeits.

The die break is from a genuine 1795 O-119, the scratch is seen in this family of fakes and is NOT an attribution of the genuine die. Also, the edge is modern and looks flat and "machined".

Always find it interesting hearing how far back many of these modern/ current counterfeits go in families.

My Coin Week article can be found at: https://coinweek.com/1794-half-doll...-with-fakes/

Best, Jack.

CNG has a real one in their current auction. It's holed but already up to $1700 bid.
