The scratch-looking marks on the obverse are actually raised like a die marker; I tried to capture an image of it.

The die crack

What would cause these lines?

That is a nice looking nickel not sure what to think about all those scratches in font of the face. The ones under the chin look natural to me. But not so sure about the ones in front of the face.

Obverse scratches might be the result of harsh/hasty die polishing.

Nice Die Crack. Those raised lines on the obverse might be Die Scratches. https://www.error-ref.com/thinning-...gn-elements/

Looks like possible cracks forming on the dome, down the facade and right pillar, and across the roof at the top right.

Die scratches like that are quite common on the obverse of War Nickels. It might be die preparation, but that is also the area where clash marks would need to be removed.

Large reverse die cracks are also common on War Nickels. Many run north-south from rim to rim. Maybe they just ran the dies hard during WWII. I have thought that odd, you would think that the silver-copper-manganese alloy would be softer than cupronickel, and thus wear out the dies slower.
