From what I gathered the mint issued satin finished coin from 2005 to 2010 in uncirculated sets (correct me if I'm wrong). Are they even worth the bother trying to collect? Do you consider them essential for a completed collection? Do any of the albums even have a spot for them (CAPS Albums especially)? I guess what I'm trying to figure is the juice worth the squeeze with this variety and what really is the difference in appearance. Wonder what they will look like over time. If anyone has any pics of comparison, that would be nice.

Are they worth the bother, I think so. Generally they are higher quality than normal business strike coins. They are struck on specially burnished planchets and I believe the dies are sand blasted. In the case of the 2009 P&D set, the special one cent coins are struck on the old alloy copper planchets as opposed to zinc. Here is a link to an ebay auction so you can see what they look like. https://www.ebay.com/itm/146489298272?_

Yes, all of the coins in the 2005-2010 mint sets are satin finish. At the time they were lower mintage sets (under 1 million) with the exception of the 2005 set. Some of the more recent mint sets (not satin finish) have very low mintages.

Even if you decide not to collect all of the satin finish sets, I would recommend at least getting the '09 set. Huge 36 coins in blister packaging and the special Lincoln cents to boot. I got mine from a LCS for $23 but even at $30 ( ebay) I consider it a bargain.

It's all up to you and what you want to collect. Personally, I only collect business strikes, so I don't consider satin finish coins necessary for my modern sets. If anything, they're a nuisance because I can't rely on mint sets to fill the holes for 2005-2010 coins. For those years I have to buy individual business strikes from ebay or dealers, and that's more difficult than you'd expect.

Most of the satin finish coin were struck on copper plated zinc planchets (2.5g). But the ones that were slated for the annual mint sets were struck on full copper planchets (3.11g).

The only satin finish coins I have in my collection are from the 2009 set. I was not buying uncirculated mint sets from the Mint yet (that started ten years later), but I had to get that one for the 95% copper cents.

So, ALL of the mints sets from 2005-2010 are 100% satin finish coins? I have 2009 for the copper cents. Good to know I can just pick up those remaining mint sets to get them all.
