This odd cross at the eagle's neck is not a gouge. It looks like it is struck into the coin. Anyone seen anything like this? Thank you for any assistance!

I agree with the coin being knifed, I have seen this multiple times. Over time, it smoothes over and just shows as a raised area.

Was just watching a video On Daniel's Coin help You channel and saw this picture of a coin listed for sale on ebay and I remembered this thread. At first I thought it might have been the same coin seeing as the auction ended over a year ago. but its a 1878 in this example. Sorry for the horrible images. this seller is a terrible coin dealer.
