Sorry, but I'm team stain/environmental toning/alternative explanation on this one.

I see that the wear on many of the high spots (TJ's hair, orbital ridge and cheekbone, jawline, collar and shoulder) are free of discoloration, which suggests that it has worn off with circulation. I think an improper allow mix would go deeper than just a few hundred microns into the coin.

I'm going with improper mixing of the alloy.
Not how the stripes are going in the same direction on both sides.

I would have to agree with you. At first, I saw a nice "woodie" nickel with border line lam issues but after reading your statement, I see a nickel with environmental issues that would explain everything. The high points tell the story well.
