There's a long and awkward story behind this (see below), but my immediate question is if this coin has been cleaned and if you have any other thoughts on the condition? The awkward story behind this question is that I may have just (inadvertently, unintentionally, accidentally) purchased this coin. I registered for an online auction yesterday, solely to watch for the first time and learn about the process. There were 1000 items being sold, and I left the auction displayed on my laptop as many of them scrolled by. Again, purely a learning experience. I was shocked this morning to receive an invoice for this item. With further digging, the bidding history indicates that I supposedly parachuted in at the very end with a single winning bid, after 20 competing bids by other (presumably real, intentional) bidders. The auction house is working with me to rule out hacking or technical issues. Barring that, my best guess is that my laptop inadvertently moved at just the wrong time, and the system recorded that as a winning bid. Yikes!? It appears I may be faced with a decision to either forfeit a hefty buyer's premium, or accept a credit I don't want, or keep the coin (which I would only do if I can immediately resell... thus the question on condition). Either way, a lesson hard learned. Edited by Morgana 06/05/2025 12:48 pm

Looks AU.. I found this exact coin listed for sale on ebay & their website by L&C Coin.. Which auction company did you "buy" this from?
I've been collecting for a couple years... Favorite Coin's are Standing Liberty quarters, Working on my type set | Coffee, Corvettes, Coins & the CCF what could be better?

Quote: Which auction company did you "buy" this from? Interesting, I also found it on ebay. To be clear, I have no desire/intent to complain about the auction house (other than perhaps about their "trigger happy" bidding button!). They have been prompt and courteous in working with me to understand what happened. That said, company is: MYNT Auctions, NYC. Auction conducted on the LiveAuctioneers platform

A quick search on google leads me to believe they are a fraudulent company... They simply list an item from ebay (that they do not own), sell it on liveauctioneers (I have heard they have fake bidders to increase the price) & then once it sells for more then the ebay price they will purchase it from the real seller & have it forwarded to you. I wonder what they would do if the coin is purchased from L&C...

AU+ details - cleaned. That said it does not appear harshly cleaned and might straight grade on a given day at a given TPG. I have "won" a couple auctions over the years with a hair trigger on the bid button or error in submitting multiple bids simultaneously. It happens and you have done your due diligence.

I wonder what they would do if the coin is purchased from L&C... Whether fraudulent, sketchy, or just "aggressively entrepreneurial"... all very interesting. With this info, I called L&C directly. They still have the coin in their stock. But, since they are not involved in the transaction (yet...), there was nothing they could suggest beyond what I have already done.... contact auction house, credit card, etc. The price I "bid" (or not) falls short of the ebay list price, but far exceeds it by the time buyers premium and fees are added. Not sure what to do now, but appreciate all the intel!

Quote: I wonder what they would do if the coin is purchased from L&C... That's also an interesting question. If I wasn't already looking at a sizeable loss, I'd be tempted to buy the coin directly from L&C and see what happens when auction house can't deliver. At this point, I'm afraid the losses would start compounding. The irony is, the only reason I was even watching the auction (or posting here, for that matter) was to learn enough to unload a small inherited collection. This is turning out to be an expensive non-hobby!

Looks like a mishandled proof, with strong cameo contrast. Wonder if it might grade PR-60 at PCGS..
What is the total cost for you (if you complete the transaction)?
I'd think you could just bail on the purchase, informing them you had no intention of placing a bid.

This appears to be a cleaned cameo proof.
Strange story on how you came to 'own' this coin. I hope the issue gets settled in your favor.

Accidental bidding is a touchy phenomenon. Last year a local New Zealand auction site had a 1916 DDO Buffalo listed with an estimated sale price of NZ$15,000. Well, it had already reached that when bidding went live. I set the phone down for the duration of the auction, because with my luck I would accidentally swipe to bid, perhaps if I'd knocked it off and tried to catch it, or whatever Final sale price NZ$30,000.
Do not read this sentence.

I sit here all day looking at coins and from the experts have learned a ton including what to look for when cleaned. Ive been dealing with the Executive coin company with good results and I trust them. Far more then I trust anything connected to ebay. I wont ask how much loss your looking at here. Its no doubt significant....ok...I found the coin too. Yeo its a fair chunk. Hope it works out for you.
