I am not a coin person but I have a question I hope some one can help me with. My father recently died and I have been going through his coin collection to divide items up for my brother and sister. Among his boxes are several American Eagle Coin Sets. I came across a box that was labled American Eagle 10th Anniversary Set Proof Bullion Coins (It was still in the opened shipping box). However, when I opened the box, it had the flyer inside that talked about the 5 coin american eage 10th aniversary set however, there was only 5 open holes with no coins. I first I thought someone had taken the coins at some point or my father had remove them for some reason. However, the order showed two items had been order and the other box was still sealed. When I opened that box, it had the same box put once again there was no coins in the box. Only the 5 empty hole case. I did notice on the shipping label it says 2 1900 where on all the other boxes it list the qty and the year. I was wondering if it was possible that the coins were sent separtely this year or if it was possible that this was an order just for the display boxes without the coins? I have to admit I am puzzled since the sealed box along with the open box contained no coins and I didn't see ths occuring in any of the other years. Any help you can provide is appreciated as I'm trying to catch up on alot of coin information. Thank-you.

Welcome,
More then likely he took the coins out and sent them off to a coin grading company. Did you see any of the coins in small plastic holders from companies such as PCGS, ANACS, or NGC?

I hope you find the contents because that represents in excess of $10,000 worth of gold and silver coins for two sets. The real gem of that set was the 1995W Silver American Eagle with a mintage of only 30,125 making it the key of the entire Silver Eagle series- that one alone is worth a bit over $3000. It was worth as much as $5000 recently but the value has tumbled in the past year or so as has other high valued modern coins. The other four coins were gold in the quantities of 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz. Those coins have similar values to other contemporary proof Gold Eagles. As far as I know, the US Mint has never sold empty presentation cases for special sets. The presentation cases have sometimes been available on ebay from people who have removed the coins from their own sets so that is really the only way to buy an empty case.

Welcome to the forum, I also am sorry to hear about your father passing. I have also never heard of the Mint selling empty boxes, and also think your dad has those coins somewhere in his collection. Like GO had stated maybe your dad sent these coins out to have them graded and you might find them in clear plastic looking containers, sealed from the outside elements to protect the coin(s) inside.I know if your lucky and ask the grading company for the "original packaging" back with the graded coins, you "might" get them back, explaining why you found them empty. I wish you all the best and hope you find the very collectible anniversary set, Mike....

Thank-you for taking the time to reply to my question. However, I have not found the first graded coin in his boxes of coins and he wasn't really the type of person to believe in getting coins graded. And also, the second set I found with no coins in it was still in the sealed shipping box from the mint. Thants why I'm stumped. I thought it might be like the Atlanta Olympic coin set that he also ordered where each set of 4 coins came in their own box but they also sent a huge display case that came empty but had spaces for all 32 coins. So for the anniversary set I thought it was possible if they made the gold coins I one time of the year and the silver eagle at a different point they might have shipped them at 2 different points during the year and then sent the anniversary box to combine them together. Well, right now I just have everthing separated into different groups, proofs, unc, eagles, and commerative sets, and haven't gone through them in detail, so hopefully I will find what might have happened. Once again, Thank-you for your help.

Well I guess I should have investigated a little more before posting. I found the 2 1995 anniversary sets in a plain mint box with a note stating that the production of the aniversary display box was behind schedule and would be shipped later. So I guess that clears up the mystery. Thank-you for your help.

Sorry to hear about your dad passing away.
No harm in posting before completing the investigation. We are happy that you found the sets.
Any chance of posting a picture of set for us drool over?
We would also be happy to help with advice on any other coins that he might have had.

If I can figure out how to post a pic I will be glad to do so. Thank-you for the offer of help. The next thing will be seeing what commerative sets he has and then trying to figure out how to divide all these single and double sets 3 ways. I have no idea how I'm going to handle the individual coins when I get to them.
