I have this 2025 D nickel that sure does look like a possible new DDO. I've turned it "every which way" to make sure it wasn't glare doubling and used natural light for all photos. Thank you for your opinion.

Just Die Deterioration - same type of DD happens on copper plated shield cents.

Well, that is certainly unusual! Are there other recent nickels that have actual splits in the doubling?

I can't find it on any of the 2023 or 2024 that I looked at. I have seen glare doubling, but this is not the same. Thanks for your comments

Keep looking. It's not split seriffs - it is the bottom sides of the details wearing out leaving a ridge in the center of the incuse parts of the dies. You see the lines in the middle of the letters and the numbers on that nickel.

I appreciate the comments.. I'll put the nickel in a 2X2 and will look at it again in a couple of months. I guess split serifs are only split serifs when they are not DDD
