I bought this coin many (many) years ago from a B&M auction. 1988. At the beginning, it had a beautiful golden brown color, and the surfaces looked 'satiny'. This darkened a bit over the years as I left the coin exposed on a tray for a few years. The cataloguers grade was VF30 or VF35, if I remember correctly. No mention of a cleaning was made. How would you grade her today? PS - The recent post about an 1870-CC Dollar got me thinking about my coin. Thanks! Edited by GERMANICVS 07/15/2025 08:27 am

Hmmm, I've not seen a lot of Seated Lib Dollars, but I've looked at a few of the other coins with the design. I'm feeling like it's at least EF, possibly CEF. I wouldn't argue with someone that said AU or thereabouts, but that's getting above my pay grade.

A few digs on the obverse but nothing I would think detail the coin. I would say XF45, don't think it would sneak into AU50. Very nice.

glad to see you posting again GERMANICVS. the coin exhibits very typical marks and light scratches from circulation. I dont think the coin was cleaned. if it was, it was a long long time ago. I think the hallowing around some of the devices is just from handling. looks like a couple small reeding hits on the right knee as well as a small mark in the obv right field. no big deal as its well toned over.
to me the reverse looks like a nice XF40 coin. I think shes a solid VF35 that grades straight as I know you grade your coins a little more stringent. if it was mine, i'd have XF40 on her.

You definitely have an eye for nice coins. I'm always impressed with your collection. I agree with the upthread comments. This coin is sharper than a VF-30 or VF-35. The two reeded edge contact marks on the right leg and lower left arm are the biggest concerns. The other contact marks are less obvious, in the fields, and more worn. I pause a bit on whether a TPG might detail the coin because of the reeded edge contact marks. None of the other marks would be a concern. On a bourse floor, the level of obverse and reverse detail is a solid EF-40, and I do not think the contact marks would be an issue. Tough date, very nice coin, and a solid example of this date.

with EF-40. The dings and scratches noted above are a little concerning. To me the scratch between the T and R in TRUST, the reeded mark on Liberty's leg, and the dings in the right obverse field are most noticeable. Not sure what a TPG would say, but overall very nice!
