Hi guys. Would need your opinions on this 1972 Lincoln Penny. The coin is full of scratches which I think not due to usage. The rims too have scratches not sure if it is collar clash. The steps of the memorial missing. Other than that,I think some die crack can be spotted. The weight of the coin is suppose to be 3.11g but this coin only weighs 3g. The diameter suppose to be 19.05mm but this coin reads 18.8mm. Thickness is 1.4mm compared to normal 1.5mm. Wonder if this coin is on the wrong planchet. Will appreciate your thoughts on this. Thank you.

Serious photo overload - we do not need that many to tell you this is a normal coin which has seen extensive circulation wear and damage.

The obverse has a slight mis-aligned die strike.

Yes, a well-circulated '72 with a minor obverse misaligned die.

Just damage. Taking this much time looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage, useless Machine Doubling, Die Deterioration, or minor insignificant imperfections (etc.).

Spend some initial time at places like error-ref.com, doubleddie.com, varietyvista.com, conecaonline.org, coppercoins.com etc. to find what actual and collectable coin errors look like.

A good way to start is, for instance, get a box of penny rolls from the bank and separate the coins by date and mint mark. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins. :)
