au details for me I guess its not in pcgs or ngc holder? on one of the pictures the toning look at one the face, but I know little of this. Back looks weird on first picture. Left side fields have different patina than right etc

To me, it looks like it is AU-53. It may just be the lighting, but the obverse coloration looks like it had been cleaned and is re-toning. The reverse looks original. It has some circulation dings, but I don't see anything excessive for the grade. The scratch in front of the nose and the scratch across the eagle's breast are the most distracting, but shouldn't be enough to detail the coin. To my eyes, the wing scratch is less distracting than the other two scratches. I'd be most concerned about whether the obverse was cleaned, and whether in hand it could be seen as market acceptable, because a cleaning might detail it. TPGs are pretty tough on grading for this date.

58. Don't see wear, just lack of luster in the fields. Nice strike above ear and eagle's chest.

Thank you for the responses. I appreciate this community's kidness. I believe it is AU, but I have a problem with wear vs. poor strike recognition especially on 1878 coins. The 1887 S is a low production coin, but it seems like it is easily obtained in great grades. Does that make it more scrutinized in grading?
