I can hardly ever afford high end coins, so I began to wonder what ere the best looking low end coins. In my opinion the Mercury dime is the most attractive G4 coin.

Tough question, and a really, really interesting topic. I hope it gets a lot of traffic.

For my money, I like capped bust half dollars best if worn down to just a profile. Seated coinage is also pretty cool in that condition.

I agree with SuperDave , just got my first bust half and I really cant afford to be putting out a lot of money.Standing liberty quarters and walkers are also pretty nice, the quarter having the eagle in flight.

Buffalo nickels..what got me started in coins..a beautiful coin.

Imho, any coin worn down to G4 has done it's service in commerce and deserves to rest proudly in your collection! Why not build a type set? (and I agree mercs still look good in G4)

This is an interesting topic.

"Buffalo nickels..what got me started in coins..a beautiful coin."

I totally agree with this statement. Although Buffalo nickels lose their date early, they retain a substantial amount of detail in G-4 on both obverse and reverse. Much more than just an outline, like most G-4 coins.

Also, the incuse indian gold quarter and half eagles retain a lot of detail in low grades. I'm not sure what a G-4 would look like, but it is honestly difficult to tell the difference between XF and mintstate based purely on the details.

I love the reverse with the Eagle in flight. Wish they would bring it back. Like for the 2010 cent maybe. As for G4 coins, I think that would have to be the Walkers and Mercs.

I believe any coin can look good in G4, as long as it isn't damaged, even Large Cents.

i hate to change the question now, but I think alot of coins look alot better with some wear than they do in uncirculated condition. I think a little circulation brings out the contrast of the fields and the details. I would take an nice $6-7 xf walking liberty over a $18 unc anyday.

A real newbie here, but I have to go with the capped(affordable)/draped bust design. Just broke down and made my first coin purchase- an 1825 Half in G4-6. I am a little partial to OLD silver, but as runner ups I give the Walker, Merc, Morgan, ....all the others credit too.
Rest in Peace

Wow! Does nobody like G4 Barber coins? Me neither. I'll go with Buffalo nickels.

I almost always do!
