My father found this in his change and I found a couple explanations online, but none that mention a fully "silver" penny like this. Interested in what it's worth (I'm guessing like $10.), but the main reason for this posting is what the hell is it?

From my poking around I guess it is a penny that was just never coated in copper.
  • I don't think it was dipped in acid.
  • I don't think it has been coated again.
  • I don't think this is a penny struck on a dime.

I didn't bother to take a picture of the reverse, obviously that makes it harder to value, but it's the same coloring as the front.

Hope someone can shed some light.

ah.... the plating has gone off.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but I've done this before with many a penny. I just put it on the light bulb, after a few hours remove it and wipe it and do this 5 times or so. Then the copper will come off...

Anyways, there could be a possibility that it could just be missing its original plating, but I don't know how to find that out.

Not raining on any parade here. I used to collect coins a few years ago and know not to expect much out of things like this. I just had no clue what it was and my Dad wanted to know.

Thanks for the input.

You should try weighing it. If it weighs less than a normal copper coated zinc penny then the copper just came off. It if weighs more, then it would be a metal other than zinc.

Alright, does this help? I have a penny on a lightbulb right now, I can't believe that works or people do that. I hope this isn't like one of those the-pool-is-on-the-roof sort of things.

I think this one just might have a chance of being the real thing. luster looks good, no evidence that I can see of heating or stuff left around te lettering like I would expect to see if you tried to remove the copper by the repeated heat and wipe off the oxide method, can't tell if it hs been replated though. still it looks better than 99% of the "no copper plating" cents you see.

From viewing the image I agree with Conder101 - it looks like it could be genuine. Given the image I see, I would grade it MS62.
