I bit the bullet on buying a cabinet to store my collection in. Although it's in my basement, the basement is fairly small and has a heat run, and I placed it near there, near the outlet. I put a humidity gauge in the area and it's generally under 55% and relatively cool.
I thought it may be a good idea to cover any seams with metal duct tape, and I am trying to keep the door sealed with weather stripping.
The image is with a new recording type temp and humidity gauge. I reset the numbers last night , the gauge is showing the current number this morning and the high/low numbers for the last 12 hours or so (since I reset it). Those numbers look pretty encouraging (will need to continue monitoring, especially on summer. The temp should stay low, unsure on humidity).
So this morning a added one of the cup-type absorbers, "Damprid", to the bottom, and a box of baking soda meant for refrigerators and closets (with the peel open side panels).
If I could get the humidity down to closer to 40%, I think may be a little better.
Plenty of room to grow, nothing is really cramped together, which is probably a better situation than packed tightly. Don't of my sets I'd like to get in to sealed boxes as well, I've been researching different sizes.

What kind of "cabinet?" Can you post some more pictures, including the outside?

Here's a pic of what I have, probably get a better idea of what it's supposed to look like without the clutter and metal duct tape on the outside. It was a bit of a chore to assemble, not a terrible job, but tedious.
Has 3 interior shelves. Your can order extra shelves, and also short legs for it if someone doesn't want it on wheels.
It's really meant for garage storage.
I've been looking a few times at the humidity gauge (I hate to open the door to peek, they do make these gauges with Bluetooth, so I had the option before I ordered, but went cheaper on it). Anyways, it's under 50%, but 47-48%, which from what I've read is an ok range, I am hoping for under 45, maybe it takes time, maybe it'll never happen. Under 50% rh is fine though.

That's a really nice cabinet and set-up, Gilly!

You don't have to go too crazy with the humidity - anything under 55 to 50 is fine.

Nice setup! It'll be interesting to see how low the humidity gets with the DampRid, especially if you keep it closed for awhile. If you're using sealable plastic bags, you could also throw some silica gel packs in them as well.

Very nice!

As long as the temperature is stable, that humidity level should be okay. You also do not want it getting too cold naturally (artificial cooling from HVAC would dehumidify the air). You can use this site to play with the numbers: http://www.dpcalc.org/

when the humidity gets 'that high' here in the AZ desert, we call it the start of our Monsoon Season. Swamp coolers fail to cool properly 'cause the water won't evaporate as effectively.
