Bill, not for sure what you are referring to, but there is a die chip extending from the mintmark to the bottom of the 9, sometimes called a "flying D". You also have a die dent at the edge of the coin, from the rim out into the field. If neither of these things are what you are talking about, you will need to point it out.

I believe it is an artifact of poor quality control of the blanks back then.
