I sent some merc picks to CACG to get the variety on the holder and a haircut on the grade.

This first 1943 S felt like a 3-piece combo, and I'm not talking chicken.

Yikes that is quite a haircut on the grade of that 1943 S/S RPM!

Thank you for posting an update on these Mercury dime varieties! It is really valuable to see the whole variety hunting process. That's a tough grade on the first S/S, but congrats on the other coins.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the thought process on the trumpet tail dimes and the S/S? PCGS attributes those varieties, so how did you decide to cross them to CAC vs. a PCGS reholder and attribution?

CACG is the only TPG that will get any money from me, especially for coins with varieties.

Collectors are seeking CACG-graded coins and are willing to pay the premium. Buyers never question CACG grades, and I have been able to get more money for the same coin than for one in a PCGS/NGC holder.

The last CACG 1943 S Merc with the trumpet tail variety in MS64 I sold for $485

The last CACG 1942 S Merc with the Inverted MM variety in AU58 I sold for $360.

On varieties, I would rather go ahead and take my haircut on grade and keep things moving. Of course, with Cherry-picking varieties, you can afford to take a little off the ears.

The 1943 S/S was just a way overgraded coin. Most valued in-hand opinions I got on that Merc were around the MS63 range. So I knew that was going to be a doozy.

With CACG, I also love the fact that they are in VA and I'm in NC. So, if I have a submission large enough, I can drop it off and pick it up to avoid the mail. Also, when I do use the mail, it is only a 2-day trip.

Thank you for posting. A shame they took a little too much off the first one.

Discussions like this really show me how much I have to learn about variety hunting.

I am a little shocked that an AU variety dime sold for that much money. I also really had no idea that the CACG slabs were so highly valued by variety collectors. I had assumed that most of the value was driven by PCGS and NGC registry set collections. Where do you liquidate CACG slabs—Great Collections, ebay, Heritage Auctions, a private dealer website?

That 1942 S 10c with the Inv MM FS-501 is a rare and hot variety.

I listed and sold my coin in August 2025. There were two examples of the same variety in ANACS holders already on ebay the day I listed my coin. I just looked, and both of those ANACS examples are still on ebay.

That is just another example of the power of a CACG holder.

I'm not much on giving TPGs my money. But CACG has proven to be a better investment than others.

I do well on ebay. I do have a couple of pieces that I'm debating on sending to GC or Heritage.

Did you crack them out of the slab before sending in?

Were you expecting FB on any of the others?

No, I send them in the holder and leave the grade open.

No, the only coin that had FB was the 1943 S/S. I was happy the FB crossed over on that coin.

It isn't apparent to me from the CACG website. Can you combine classic and modern coins on the same submission form? Also, is it possible to combine raw coins and crossover slabs?

Their grading fee seems comparable to PCGS, but the variety and error attribution fees seem much more reasonable. Do they really give half off for a correct variety attribution?

Classic, Modern. Would be a separate submission.

Raw, Slabbed. Would be a separate submission.

You can send/mail Classic, Modern, Raw, and Slabbed at once, but each would be a separate submission.

Each submission is $10, but if you use the online portal to create your submission, it is reduced to $5. The online portal is a breeze to use.

When you use the online portal to create a submission, you can load all the coins you want to send, and the portal will put them all in the correct submission section for you.

I always use the Standard tier, which is $35, and it includes the photos at no extra charge.

The variety designation is $20, and they reduce it to $10 if you have the correct designation. For FS#s, you will have to use the correct FS# from the CherryPickers Guide to get the discount. PCGS/NGC FS#s can differ, and they will not receive the discount.

I like using the Standard tier for the turnaround time of about 3 weeks, and you get the photos.

They do have an economy option at $20; it does not include a photo, and an additional photo would be $5. Turnaround time? I'm not sure, I've never used it.

The customer service at CACG is top-notch. (Shout-out to Dominique!)

To me, you can't beat the price. I like that collectors highly respect their holders. It puts collectors at ease when paying the crazy prices that variety coins can demand.
