My coin dealer stopped by this morning. Out of bussiness. Retireing, sold off all his stock to some company out of New Orleans. He did have one last offering.

The price. A handshake and a thanks. 26 years with the same dealer, what a great guy.

Sad to hear another store bites the dust , the overheads must be awful. No need to state the obvious..ie..thats a nice coin ..lol..sure it is.It got me wondering though , after looking at a few buffalos lately here on the forum and then seeing the same design in gold..does anybody else prefer the "silver" look of the indianhead/buffalo..does it lose something looks wise in gold ?

Somehow I think it does..must be something to do with circulation and wear points/shadows and toning..dunno

There walks a man into retirement with his head held high, and a circle of great friends. I only hope I can do that myself some day.

Indeed a very nice gesture on part of your dealer! Although I wouldn't mind a gift like that , I prefer the silver color of the Buffalos!

I am sure you did your part as well in all your days as this dealers customer. I doubt he went around to everyone and did that. Congrats to you for doing good business. I love nice stories and happy endings. I am sure your dealer will be OK.
I think it looks better in gold, like the sun is shining on it late in the evening at sundown, sort of symbolic.

MorgansRmine,
Great story, have you thought about inviting him to join CCF? With all his years of knowledge of coins he would be a great asset to us here on CCF. Just a thought.

I would personally prefer the gold... photos don't always do it justice.

But what I really posted to say was that that deserves one heckuva steak retirement dinner!

Wow. I always hope that a guy like that has a long and happy retirement, free of health issues.

I'm always sorry to hear about people retiring. I know we all look forward to not having to work every day but as a retired person I think it is better to keep on working. We get lazy, irritable (due to age), find ourselves discussing all the people we USED to know but are now deceased and worst of all our health starts to fail. If your rich I guess you can do a lot of traveling, but most are not.
In his case I hope all goes well. And a really nice departing present.
Rest in Peace

My coin shop closed down within the last year. Wonderful owner. I miss her and her store. Believe it or not, there is now only one coin shop in the entire area of better than 100,000 people. I have yet to visit it, but now I will.

Great story, and he sounds like he was a token to the coin community in your area. I hope he has a nice retirement and makes me happy to continue supporting my local coin shops.

I would like the 2001 Buffalo Silver Dollar the best,
but the gold coins seem to be a closer (more 'accurate')
match to the original 1913 Type 1 Nickel design.
