Another 1904-O with some chatter on the obverse and odd toning on the left side of the reverse with a small rim ding at 2 O'clock. Thank you for looking and your thoughts on grade. -makecents-

Another nice 1904-O. This one has more marks than the first coin, but nothing as deep. The marks are on both the devices and fields here. Both coins have reverse rim dings, but none of those bother me too much. My bigger concern with this coin is that some of the scratches, especially the east-west reverse scratches, look more like light circulation than bag contacts. I think it still grades as UNC, but the scratches are worth noting. This coin also has a more typical and slightly weaker strike than the first. Here, I think the number of scratches holds the coin to MS-62 on a bourse floor. The cheek scratches and eagle's breast scratches are just a little too much in my mind for MS-63. A TPG may disagree and holder them at 63. Both of these are nice coins for their grades.

fortcollins, thank you for your input, it makes a lot of sense. In case you were wondering about the VAM on this one, it's a little better than the last one but still not rare. It does have a G letter transfer though. VAM-2A https://vamworld.com/wiki/1904-O_VAM-2A

I would say the obverse holds it to a 62

I'm at 62 here. Not as nice as the other you posted but still original and I'm sure flashy in hand.

I don't think it's as bad as most think on here. I go with an MS63.

a little weak on the breast and ear area for this year. a good amount of luster is remaining. some scuffs in the fields and quite few small marks on the cheek. with the weak strike and the other marks on the breast. i'd say its MS62+ the luster might bump it at a TPG to 63

Lovely coin !. . . This got to be a MS63, might get a "Unc Detail" because of the ding..

Quote: Side Note: -makecents-, very nice photographs you took of your coins! Thank you, CoinForMe! This is one of those situations I feel they should be decent if you want a true reading. I see a lot of soft pics that get much higher grades than what I got, I would really rather know a true grade, not what I want....

you're correct. if youre posting a coin for assessment you want the best representation of what the coin looks like in hand. grading by photo is not that easy. in fact, one tip would be to not use any overhead lighting that can cause glare. it creates shadow areas and obscure surfaces. if you cant use natural light use at least 2 light sources on either side that would then offset each other and eliminate most of the shadows

We are presently renovating our main level of the house and living in the basement, when we get back upstairs, I will have plenty of natural light to work with.
