I need some help to understand a Jefferson that I found tonight while roll searching.

It appears by visual observation to be a genuine 1945-S nickel ..... except the "S" mint mark above the dome is 'small' .... the same size as we expect to see in the normal location in pre-1965 coins.

This coin is well worn .... I grade it VG ... and also suffers from the dark black patina we all see in old coins.

Adding to the mystery is the fact that the reverse of the coin is showing corrosion that I've never seen on a silver War Nickel ..... a few significant corrosion spots. It also does not have the obvious 'greasy' look of a silver War Nickel ..... nickel searchers know what I am saying here.

I am curious about what I have found ..... and can use any opinions to help me sort it out

I do recall the story of the guy who was counterfiting 1944-P coins ..... but forgot the mint mark above the dome. I wonder if he was also known to make 1945-S and included a 'small' mint mark?

Whatever ..... I've seen LOTS of nickels .... but never one like this.

I will post a photo if someone tells me how .... and the Admin dudes allow.

What do you know about a 1945-S nickel with an small mint mark above the dome?

Tell me

Thanks

David

This I gotta see. Upload your image to a place like inkfrog or perhaps your ISP allows you some space.
If your image is under 90 kb you can post it without hosting it.

Look for the link that says Reply to Topic just above the space for responding in the box below and click on that first, rather than just posting in the convenient box below.
A new place to type in will appear with smilies and stuff on the left of it.
Then there under the box you will see a green camera Help-Me-...-War-Nickel-W/-Small-Mint-Mark Add Image DO NOT use special characters or spaces in filenames, letters or numbers only!

Take it from there, not all that difficult.

I can't wait to see this picture. I doubt that it is a Henning. He didn't know enough to use the correct reverse with the 1944 so I have my doubts he would have done this. But pics will help a lot.

Finally home from work .... another late day ..... took another close look at the coin and still don't know what I have.

The best magnification I have is a 5x glass ..... I suppose it's possible I'm missing something here ..... but thru 5x this is a 1945-S with a small 's' above the dome.

Anyways ..... never took a coin photo ..... will get that done and share for opinions ..... but not tonite.

Back to work tomorrow at 5:30am ...

Please stay tuned ...... I can use some help from you experts to see what I am missing.

Best

David

Now is a good time, during intermission to sooth that parched, dry portion of the back of your throat, with a cool, refreshing, soft drink, like many other things you will find at the snack bar!Anyone remember where that saying "was" from?

Anyone remember where that saying "was" from?

If memory serves me, I remember from the movie theatre and the drive-ins.

Still waiting on pics or scans of the nickel?
