While on vacation, my 10 year old son (and aspiring coin collector) spotted one of those bubble gum machines that advertised rare coins. 50 cents it said and promised either a foreign coin or an older US coin. Pictured were things such as Barber dimes, Steelies, etc. It also promised that about 1/2 the coins were US. I thought, there goes 50 cents - if we're lucky we'll get a wheatie, but what the heck, we were on vacation. So, he puts in the 50 cents and low and behold, out comes a 1924-P Buffalo nickel in VG condition. Wow! Not a valuable coin, but not bad for 50 cents. He was quite pleased. Maybe there's a coin collector out there seeding these machines.

I remember when I was much younger (in the late 70's) , machines like that were quite common where I lived. In fact I still have a 1943 cent (still in the capsule) I got out of a machine like that.

I have never seen a machine like that. I got a franklin halve out of a dollar claw machine!

They used to have one of those machines in the coin shop at the mall in Fort Wayne. That was pretty much my one fun thing to do when the ex drug me around the place to play pack mule for her. I used to plug every quarter I had in there and then open the capsules while I was waiting outside the dressing rooms. She'd come out and show me whatever it was she was trying on and I'd show her a shiny IHC or whatever I'd scored. Of course neither of us had the least bit of interest in what the other was showing off. heheheh

Wow what a cool idea for getting kids excited about coin collecting. It kind of reminds me of the days when I would spend 30 cents on an unopened packs of baseball cards, just hoping and praying for that Cal Ripken or Don Mattingly card. :P

They were 10 cents when I was a kid and we were hoping for Pete Rose, Hank Aaron and Steve Carlton! I actually saved all of those and a couple of years ago put together a complete set of 1973 Topps cards in nice condition.
