Ive heard this is how some people fake toning , I've even seen a detailed thread on it with pictures. I dont much like toned coins and detest fake toning "monster toning" everyone looks like an oil spill. But out of interest and never having eaten at taco bell I thought id go tonight , swipe a few napkins and see if its true. If theres any interest in the thread ill add pictures of how I've done it,sealed in a ceder cigar box..see what happens in 6 months ..thought id put a few choice silvers in there and towards the end ..who knows..probably a prize giveaway of whatevers the result in the box.
Anybody know of any definate reasons not to bother ? ..other than taco bell sux

The new Chicken Soft Taco is a decent buy for 89 cents.
Be prepared to wait a long time for the napkin to start working. I've had a silver coin nestled inside a T.B. napkin for about 3 months now and it's just picked up a hint of toning.

Does toning take away any value, or will it increase it? Also, is wrapping it up in a napkin considered artificial or natural?

I've collected a lot of TB napkins for the same type of experiment. Remember it's important to have one or more 'control' variables. So, if you were toning common 1964 silver coins, you'd leave 1/3 untreated, 1/3 exposed to TB napkins, and 1/3 to other, whiter, napkins. My thought is that if you can take a low value coin and make it more attractive for your personal collection--no problem. If your intention is to deceive others for profit--problem. Natural vs. Artificial is a debate I'm not entering. -wheatiefan

Well ,it wasnt as bad as I feared.Tacos could use filling but were acceptable.I tried that 89c chicken deal bherring , it was ok , bit of hot sauce and it was just fine.2 tacos and that chicken thing , soft taco...burp..an'a root beer I totally overdid it on the napkins thinking I wouldnt be back , its a considerable drive too , I feel a little guilty for the 5 inch stack of napkins but hey..science calls ..ya know. Ive an old wooden cigar box that will seal them til the snows arrive with its seasonal boredom. Value question Chris , its a two way street , some people like toners and others dont. Some people wouldnt touch a toned coin , others pay silly money at times.Personally I dont like a toned coin if its in the high end ,not enough that id ruin otherwise perfect coins attempting to emulate toning though. For the experiment ill use a variety of US and UK coins , all circulated with enough detail to make it worth the time , no point doing scrap/melt coins. Ill get a selection and photos of the test subjects, put'er away in a closet til xmas and we'll see.

I enjoy naturally toned coins but cant stand artificial toning. I would say that any type of experiment that has to do with toning is artificial.

the brown taco bell napkins will speed along the toning of a coin. I have messed with this myself and it takes a couple months but it will start to tone in the brown taco bell napkin. usually it will tone the whole Obverse and Reverse the same amount all over and doesn't look natural but if you want to experiment with a couple low cost coins or silver bars I say go ahead that way you will know what to look for when you come across it again

Thats exactly it Bryan , id heard about it but never actually seen it for myself.Ive only seen it done to US silver which typically has a different purity to other world coins. I thought id try a variety of items , new 1c's , maybe a 2009p dime , a couple rosies and mercs and some UK coins as well as various world coins. Ive always wondered why out of all the coins in the world , why does US silver appear to tone much more so than other countries coinage, even the clad tones,i havnt experienced that anywhere else I can think of,certainly not the UK. Ill get a good selection from several countries and see how each evolves.

I thought people were kidding. I guess it works on any coin silver clad and nickel? I could easily forget to look at a coin for a year or 6 months so waiting is not a problem. I might try this myself.

This is no lie! I'll never forget it. Back in the mid 70's I lived in Lake Charles LA and there was a Taco Bell on the main drag. It was great and my favorites were tacos of course, beef burritos, and they had a thing called encheritos. The encheritos were actually an enchilada/burrito with just ground beef taco flavored meat inside surrounded by sauce and melted cheese on top with three half black olives lined up across the top.
One night, I was out at a disco bar and stopped in Taco Bell with the munchies and ordered a couple encheritos and a coke and we all sat down to eat up.
The first one was great, when I opened the second one, there was a dead cockroach lying on it's back in the hollow part of the center black olive. The rest you can imagine if that wasn't enough to gross you out, It got way worse. LOL! I can't go back even though they are everywhere now. They don't make those encheritos anymore. This was when T.B. was only down south.

I thought it was a myth too Wheezy , too many people say it has effects to discount it,so I thought id try it.As far as I know it will work with any coin,it was just my experience id seen pics of a silver coin. Apparantly after 6 months its quite stunning , beyond that time period is still unknown I guess. Hence my coin capsule , I wont miss them for 6 months and theres more than a good chance ill leave a few for a much longer period.
Hey ..Wheezy and Malissa , if you do some and we recruit a few others , we could have a contest around December/January to see who can come up with the goods , have a vote contest and tally up to see whos is best liked. I wonder if it should or even could be limited to taco bell napkins so it would be on an honor system , tell the forum how the toning was achieved , was it a napkin or newspaper , that kind of thing.
'there was a dead cockroach'
Thats better than half a dead cockroach mate lol
