eeek! thats so grosss!
I took my cousin out for a hangover breakfast when we were teenagers. We were insanely hung over and feeling sick and knew that a good greasy breakfast is a cure-all for drinking. Anyway, we both ordered bacon and eggs with homefries. Halfway through the meal she flips over her homefry and there was a roach cooked right into it. I of course decided to never eat potatoes again lol she on the other hand just pushed that one potato off to the side and kept eating!! I also decided never to eat at her house again. (if that is considered "clean enough" who knows what she would be serving at home?) :)
I am all in for comparing our loot in a few months. do we have to store it somewhere airtight?

Yes, I'll get the nerve to go through the drive thru soon, ask for a soda and a taco and a lot of napkins. Thanks for the memories.

Brown napkins have a relatively high sulfur content due to the processing of the pulp, this sulfur content is what causes the toning. White napkins will have a lower sulfur content than brown napkins due to the bleaching process so that is why Taco Bell napkins are used(most fast food places have white napkins).

Excellent Malissa and Wheezy , hope others will join in , itll be fun opening our boxes at xmas and see what we have. Malissa , I dont know if it should be airtight or not , I've used a cigar box and layered the napkins with coins in between, its closed and in a dark closet now. I put a little of everything in just to see.Ive plenty left over napkins if either of you are stuck for those.

Cool Parklane , this will be really interesting I'm thinking.I put all kinds in mine , cuba , south afrika , us, uk , canada , silver clad and copper. I was thinking , those industrial handtowel dispensers used to hold the brown paper towels , I wonder if they do the same thing.

excellent topic!
I hope that everyone remembers to post their results in a couple of months.
Can you imagine CNN (in 6 months): Kiren Chetry: "And today, folks, Taco Bell has announced that they are experiencing a mysterious shortage of napkins." [camera moves to reporter outside an Atlanta Taco Bell] Reporter: "And today we are interviewing Jose, manager of the largest Taco Bell in Atlanta. So, Jose, how do you account for this mysterious shortage of Napkins?" Jose: "Ah donno. All that we remember is that a lot of people have been asking for a lot of change, and then asking for rolls of Lincoln pennies. And later we found that we were re-filling the napkin holders every five minutes. And this is during breakfast! And we don't serve breakfast." Reporter: "I guess that we'll have to followup on this mystery. Back to you Kiren." Kiren: " And we surely will follow up. In another development, war was declared to day in the western US. More after this word from our sponsors."

I tried this about eight months ago with a Morgan $ and a Barber half. I wrapped each coin in a Taco Bell napkin, closed with scotch tape and placed them on the window sill in direct sunlight. After four months my curiosity got the better of me and I opened the wraps. Both coins had orange/brown toning covering the upper surface ... and not particularly attractive. The surface of the coin that was not faced towards the sunlight had no toning whatsoever. In my next attempt, to achieve a more appealing and realistic result, I plan to wrap the circumference of the coin with a strip from the TB napkin and wrap the whole thing in white paper/napkin. I will turn these over half way through the experiment so both surfaces are facing direct sun. This should mimic the toning environment of an album (Waite-Raymond) and keep from blotching. See you all in six months!

As a sad aside to this thread, the Taco Bell chihuahua mascot Gidget died yesterday at age 15. A moment of silence...

So long, little doggie. This must be the Gidget Gadget Experiment. Gotta get those before shots. I'm going to try American and Canadian silver, and throw in a clad and possibly a bi-metal coin. I'm also going to do dark in a box and lit on a window sill in the spare bedroom. All of my windows are UV rated, not sure how much difference I'll see. I'll also turn them monthly. Oh, and a control group in flips in my sock drawer. Will report back on the winter solstice.

Thats funny Treashunt :) , dunno if I can handle all the emotion swings..sad about the little dog , I have a stuffed toy of that little dog and he says Merry Christmas amigos in Spanish.
I bought it as a stuffed toy on the bay as it had a santa claus hat , I was pretty surprised it talked.
Seatednut , a couple of times I've read about an unattractive brown toning , this would seem to fly in the face of all the fuss being made about it.A long time to wait for dissapointment. Could the sunlight have had its affect ? I've got mine in a wooden cigar box in a dark closet,no light whatsoever..will mine differ any..we'll see I guess.

Quote: well you aint alone in playing w/ your coins I got a Merc over the kicthen sink in an envelope and a 67 canadian dollar on the dash board of my truck wanna compare notes I've got forty thousand French Francs in my fridge... sorry. If you can't stomach Taco Bell, Zaxbys also uses brown napkins. It's my understanding that the reason you get toning in older albums is due to the acidity of the paper, and that this can damage the coin given enough time/poor enough grade of paper... can anybody confirm/debunk? If I were going to try this particular experiment, i'd have to add a bullion American Silver Eagle or similar coin, something pure that has had minimal handling. Circulation and/or careless storage adds a lot of variables to the mix.

I did PennehChaos , I included a unc 1921 morgan , an unc frankie and an unc canada maple which if I understand correctly is the purest silver coin on the planet. I tried to put one of every material in the box seperated by several napkins, randomly placed rather than stacked.

Sunlight and the accompanying heat are key to expediting the process. Without it, you could be looking at "years" for any noticeable results. and PennehChaos Quote: It's my understanding that the reason you get toning in older albums is due to the acidity of the paper, and that this can damage the coin given enough time/poor enough grade of paper... can anybody confirm/debunk? Not acid directly, it's the sulphur content of the paper. Waite-Raymond albums had a higher than normal content and created some spectacular rim toning at the points of contact. The chemists may weigh in and offer that the chemical reaction is the result of sulphuric acid ... I fell asleep in chemistry.
