So what I hear is Russian/Soviet Union is the hot item now. Why?
I have some nice coins but not over 50. Maybe that is it. When you have 2 million and you have 50

Anyway what is the deal?

Russia is a Great country to collect from because there are thousands of different low cost examples to collect. I have around 300 myself; the most of any country in my collection

Grace, is that 300 different coins, or 300 different types? I have 221 of the former and 138 of the latter, and I agree it is a great country for a collector. I have even learned to read the letters. I struggle with the meaning, though...

Mmmm interesting exercise...

Likewise, I have over 200 different coins from Russia but only 55 types. The bulk are the various denomination kopeks from the CCCP from different years. The new 10 ruble series are excellent but difficult for me to come by.

The largest number of coins from any 'single' country in my collection is from Germany (counting pre-war, federal, democratic and euro) with 739 coins but only 64 types but then again with 5 different mints...

Then Great Britain (pre-decimal, decimal) 550 coins, 159 types.

Next , India (pre-british, British, republic) 421 coins, 173 types.

My Thai coins number 'only' 388 but 268 types. Then again I suppose it depends on where you live with the ease of obtaining them, especially commemoratives.

By what I understand, the increased popularity of Russian coins has been spurred by increased wealth among the Russian populace. A lot of Russian coins are being repatriated, making for a shortage on the world market and causing values increase.

I simply lost track of how much Russian coins I have. Currently on omnicoin, it's at 1360 Russian coins, including duplicates.
