i am sure most of us collected something before coins then when we found this great hobby we either cut back or stopped collecting what we collected before coins.
well before coins I collected sports cards and I stopped so I can put my extra funds toward coins. well now there is this huge sports cards show coming to ohio close by where I live. i wish a coin show would come close by instead of 3 hours away. anyways. I have this huge urge to go to the show and buy some cards I am going to go.
so I was just wondering do you get urges to start collecting again what you use to collect before coins

what I collected before coins was cars and I still have that collection as well and don't see me ever selling either one (because my kids would kill me). I still will buy a car even though I don't have any place for any more of them if I see something I like and can afford it. I am trying to get my son interested in cars now so I can pass on the knowledge and excitement I get when cleaning/driving or just looking at them but it seems my youngest daughter gets more excited about the cars than he does, he just looks at a car as a way to get from point A to point B. I started a car project with him (a 89 Camaro RS) that started to be a father son project with him and I and he seemed to just have lost interest because I admit I am a perfectionist and want everything to be perfect and he just wants to get in there and get it done no matter how it looks when it is done as long as it gets him where he wants to go and well for the past 3 weeks we haven't turned a wrench on the car, it is sitting out there with hood unbolted, most of the front of the engine off ready to pull the engine out and we still have to unhook the exhaust and a few more wires but until he shows some interest it will sit there no matter if he gets his license before than or not. I said when he starts back to school if he hasn't asked to go work on it I will do it myself and when its done I will drive it and he will not get to

For me it is acoustic guitars. I had 17 at one time, but now only have 6, including a pretty rare 9 string. And I really get the urge every now and again to buy another one. I have always wanted a Dobro but never had one yet, so I think that will be one I do give in to.

I have a 1994 Z28, but one could always use another Camaro. Back to the topic, it's funny you should ask, just 30 minutes ago I joined a forum for Hot Wheels collectors. No, I don't collect them, nor did I before coins, but I think I will very soon. I just think they're cool to look at. Plus, most of them are only $1 a piece.

Mine was stamps.
I gave all my stamps to my brother in my pre-teens, and haven't looked back.

I have dabbled in several areas off and on... stamps, sportscards, etc... but coins have been a steady interest since I was about 7 years old. I do get the urge to go to card shows when they are in town but usually don;t because I know I'll spend money that I will regret later. I still have a bunch of autographed baseballs in my closet some where... I should get them out and sell them somewhere so I can buy more coins!

You see...I collect collections and hobbies. (and exasperated looks from my wife) I love my trains, My kids love my trains. they will most likely slow down for me for a while, but won't go away. In fact, I went to a show yesterday. Coins, however, I have been doing with my 6yr old daughter...so, right now the coins get more attention. Also, coins are everywhere... Card shows, Train shows, gun shows, flea markets, yard sales, Grocery stores...you get my point. Unless you collect nothing but high end stuff, you can always find some neat stuff, while looking at other stuff. I think for me, it was always the thrill of the hunt more than the item itself.

I collected sports cards as a kid - primarily baseball and football. I completed my 1973 Topps baseball card set (all 660 cards) a couple of years ago. Luckily I kept the cards in good condition from childhood. It also helped that I had the expensive cards like the Mike Schmidt rookie card already. I filled in the blanks from ebay and the local card store. I was going to start on my football card collection from the same era but realized there were too many holes to fill and it would be too expensive. So, I just took the really nice ones (including some cool basketball and hockey ones too) and put them in holders. I haven't done anything with it lately though. I still have my stamp collection from childhood as well - but again, it's just sitting on a shelf. I haven't really gotten the urge to start these back up, but I could see going back to that someday - you never know. My baseball card collection sat untouched for 30 years and then I suddenly got the urge to finish that set. So, no, I don't think what you are doing is unusual at all. As mrwisker says, if you've got collector in the blood (I do for sure - I get the same looks from my wife), you just gots to go with it!

I balance coin collecting with other things I collect - stamps, banknotes, Hardy Boys books, hockey cards, a certain men's magazine that started in the 70s, beer cans, and basically anything "old".
The beauty of it is that sometimes it's easy to find interesting stuff at any garage sale. I also keep an eye out for items I'm missing - National Lampoon and Twilight Zone magazine issues, original printings of Stephen King novels, different versions of Mickey Spillane and Ian Fleming novels I don't already have.
Of course, if anyone here has any of these items kicking around, they can make extra coin money from me...

I stay away from baseball cards after years of collecting them. The problem with these is that a star player like Sammy Sosa or Mark McGwire could have the value of his cards cut down in half overnight by steroid allegations. Or something can be revealed after a player retired where he used performance enhancing drugs during his career, and suddenly he's not as popular anymore and the card values drop to pennies on the dollar. Or a star player could get a devastating injury and never be the same, and his cards drop in value to pennies on the dollar (see Bo Jackson). I saw way too many of my favorite players cards go this route so from a long term investment standpoint, I was no longer interested in switched to coins. :)

I collected Baseball cards back in 94 then the strike and then the bottom dropped out of the market. I do however have all the A Rod rookies. Other than the occasional pack here and there, no more baseball cards The new Baseball Card market is squirrely at best. Really old or Graded cards are still your best bet. I recovered from packitis ripatosis years ago..just to be bit by the rollis searchous bug
packitis ripatosis-that urge to by as many packs of anything, just to see whats in them.
WpgLwr If you have a better list of what you are looking for...send it off to me..I can help look

My other love is motorcycles. I have one model that was made only for one year with less then 2000 made world wide. Now only if it were a coin it would be worth a lot more.

Let me guess, a neo-Indian?
Belleek, Belleek, and more Belleek. First Day Covers and First Flight Covers. Vinyl records? I am getting near to 10,000, all in genre and alphabetical order. Coins, too. Some currency. Tokens. Elongated pennies.....
We started as hunters and gatherers, and, as mrwisker indicated, it is fun to collect or amass collections or hobbies.
And, Bryan1315, have you seen the book on proper over-spray patterns for the 'factory' look? It goes way beyond matching numbers and putting the decals on right. Beware a dyslexic mechanic with OCD! They are absolutely the worse perfectionists in the world!

packitis ripatosis-that urge to by as many packs of anything, just to see whats in them. I had that packitis ripatosis disease too. It's cured but I too suffer from the same rollis searchous condition. In all seriousness, the strike of 94 was killer, and just a couple years later with the expansion of the internet, it seemed like the prices were driven down as the supply side went up. Another thing that I found discouraging was the influx of new brands, sets, chase cards etc. It got to be too expensive to collect all the cards of your favorite players. When I was growing up, it was Topps, Fleer and Donruss and there would be maybe only a few from each company to collect (for example base card, all star card, record breaker card). Now there are so many parallel sets, autographed cards, redemption cards, etc. Back in the day, packs were 35 cents or so, now they are $3-$5 and up. If I had put all the money into coins that I did for sportscards, I would be much better off today. I would be lucky to break even on the cards I have now.
