I go through this same thing. I was saving up for the next local coin show a few months back when a sports card show came to town! I ended up blowing some of the money there. But the coin show is now this coming weekend and I don't think I will hit another card show until the big one this December.

Quote: I completed my 1973 Topps baseball card set (all 660 cards) a couple of years ago. Luckily I kept the cards in good condition from childhood. that's a very nice set kenkat with all those all time great players in it. are the cards well centered it is hard to get well centered cards on vintage issues. Quote: I stay away from baseball cards after years of collecting them. The problem with these is that a star player like Sammy Sosa or Mark McGwire could have the value of his cards cut down in half overnight by steroid allegations. I agree CoinHunter53562 I stay away from most modern players and I will not collect modern baseball cards for the reasons you stated plus I hate the fact that some of the modern players ruined the records of the game. the only modern player I really collect is derek jeter Quote: Another thing that I found discouraging was the influx of new brands, sets, chase cards etc. It got to be too expensive to collect all the cards of your favorite players. I agree the amount of different brands now is crazy that's why I collect from 1980 back you only have one brand and a couple of cards at most for each player you want to collect.

Quote: You see...I collect collections and hobbies. (and exasperated looks from my wife) Truth! I have hobby attention disorder... I'll go on a binge for one particular topic, spend a couple weeks learning everything I can about it, spend all my disposable income for a given time on it... Then a month or two later I'll be on to something else. Then a year or two later I'll come back to it for another couple of months. Most would call it a character flaw, I think it makes me more "colorful" Quote: My other love is motorcycles. I have one model that was made only for one year with less then 2000 made world wide. Now only if it were a coin it would be worth a lot more. "Sometimes, 'rare' just means 'nobody wanted them when they were new either'" The problem with cars & bikes is that almost nobody collects the whole set!

The answer to that question is a resounding NO! As a kid I collected rocks. Yes, rocks, like the ones you find laying around on the ground. Nothing special, just your everyday milky quartz and sandstone.

Thanks, Scott. I did focus on getting cards that are well centered and with minimal blemishes and no creases or major corner dings. I bought these things like crazy when I was 10 - they were 10 cents a pack with gum - and Topps was the only choice. I was fortunate in that I had a lot of duplicates that I had saved, so I was able to pick the best of the bunch in many cases. And I did spend some money to either fill in cards I didn't have or upgrade a card in poor condition. I'm not great at card grading, but I'd say the average card grade is around PSA 7/Near Mint. I eliminated anything below a PSA 6 for the most part and probably have a few PSA 8's and 9's in there. Gosh, maybe I need to join a sports card forum. I have some 1972 and 1974 cards - wonder if I could trade 1973's and build those sets out also? Hmmm... Ken

When I was a kid begging my Dad for baseball cards everytime when we stopped in a store, they were 5 cents a pack. I remembered when they went up to 10 cents a pack....he grumbled about it. I actively bought cards through the late 1970's and stopped. Started buying again in 1987 for about 5 years. Big mistake. The thousands of dollars I spend in those years were wasted. Should've bought silver!

I joined our youngest son in collecting baseball cards. We have about 50,000. Cream of the crop are five Mickey Mantle cards we invested in together.
I have since given all the cards to my son, and hope he will pass them on to his son sometime down the road.

Back when I was a young man, and dinosaurs walked the earth, there was this thing called The Beatles. So I collected a few cards, magazines and records. Seems I forgot to stop. 10,000 or so pieces Beatle related and 3-5000 pieces of MacCartney related later; it's taking up much needed coin space. Then there's the cigarette cards, not to mention the books....................

hobby attention disorder
I think that sums it up just nicely.
I still actually collect comics...but they have to be graded. They are the only ones that really hold value and condition.
I also got another exasperated look from my wife today...WOO-HOO...I should have taken a picture. (make a collection out of those too)
